About the Role:

The Sr. Disability Management Specialist will function collaboratively as a human resources team member to coordinate the effective case management of all disability claims, including both occupational and non-occupational claims (short and long term) and return to work programs. Additionally, as part of the total rewards team, the Sr. Disability Management Specialist will drive initiatives that improve the overall Team Member experience.


What You Will Do:

  • One of three Sr. Disability Specialists on the team responsible for effective case management that successfully supports an early and safe return to work.
  • Meeting with and assessing Team Members who are candidates for the Disability Accommodation Program/Return to Work (RTW) program; coordinating and leading the return-to-work meetings; and monitoring progress during their transition.
  • Advising and training team members at all levels in the organization on disability, the duty to accommodate, and RTW processes and factors that support a successful and safe return to work and adaptation in the work environment
  • Responsible for updating and maintaining the important metrics established for the disability management and total rewards team.
  • Responsible for the overall administration of the group benefits and total reward programs
  • Analyzing occupational injury trends and making recommendations for prevention opportunities
  • Providing guidance, support, and updates to all stakeholders.
  • Maintaining complete and accurate record keeping for case documentation, including the Parklane Incident Reporting software and case management file.
  • Supporting the administration of our proactive absence management process by identifying absenteeism trends and reducing unplanned absences through early intervention initiatives.
  • Handling sensitive matters and adhering to the strict confidentiality of medical and personal information.
  • Communicating with external stakeholders, i.e., WSIB, and insurance carrier, to ensure that accurate, timely, and complete information is provided to support disability claims and planning for a return to work and accommodation.
  • Challenging functional abilities, accommodations, and duration of accommodations and works to arrange for Independent Medical Evaluations, Third Party Evaluations, Functional Capacity Evaluations, and Suitability Reviews.
  • Responsible for supporting annual merit increase for hourly Team Members, including facilitating mailout, creation of a new compensation grid, and calculating new rates for upload into the HRIS system
  • Manage terminations for frustration of contract due to illness and absence, including providing recommendations on cases in addition to obtaining legal opinions where necessary
  • Reviewing and analyzing claims and processes for cost-containment opportunities
  • Participate in and prepare for WSIB and WSIAT appeals either in writing or in person
  • Refer high-cost exposure work-related claims to external counsel for either consultation
  • Helping to craft our culture of caring through a holistic approach to well-being by leading our wellness initiatives, promoting and connecting Team Members to health and wellness resources, and supporting our engagement initiatives
  • Required to partner and maintain close working relationships with various departments and team members, including Health and Safety, Operations, Human Resources, etc.
  • Shares information, knowledge, and standard processes with the business while supporting and adopting standardized North American processes, procedures, and policies.
  • Other duties as assigned


What You Need:

  • Minimum Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree required in human resources, business, or a related field or equivalent experience
  • A minimum of 3-5 years in disability case management required
  • Experience within a non-union manufacturing environment is required
  • Experience dealing with a high volume of claims at any given time
  • Established track record of managing disability and absenteeism
  • Proven track record to interpret and understand physical demand descriptions to determine which modifications need to be considered before returning the Team Member to work
  • Understanding privacy and confidentiality provisions concerning personal health information and other personnel matters
  • Strong understanding and knowledge of workers\xe2\x80\x99 compensation policies and legislation
  • Strong understanding of disability-related (i.e., AODA) legislation
  • Proven track record to build strong working relationships, internal and external to the organization
  • Strong analytical skills and logical thought processes
  • Ability to consult with and advise corporate /business unit leaders on issues and to engage the appropriate internal or external resources to implement solutions
  • Must be hands-on, meticulous, and process-minded and cope well with a high volume of HR transactions
  • Demonstrates good judgment and professional maturity, along with the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
