Position purpose:
Reporting to the Manager, Advertising and Creative, the Senior Graphic Designer produces high quality creative graphic designs and artworks for use in communications and marketing materials of large scale and manages their production and delivery. Depending on the project, manages external design and productions resources. Ensures high quality professional client service and maintains a strong team ethic at all times.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • The incumbent provides expertise and creative input from the inception stage of design work through to final production, all while managing priorities and possible conflicts. Plans all stages (expectations, initiation, execution and reports) and all segments (timeline, budget, human resources), and identifies and manages the necessary expertise in design, production and distribution for marketing and communications graphic design projects. Coordinates the writing, editing and translation of projects.
  • Designs and produces large scale marketing and communications projects for clients of the Communications Directorate. Manages the production of design projects, using external designers when needed, and acts as a resource person on graphic design matters. Examples of projects include an 80 page view book, recruitment campaigns advertising and promotion, uOttawa Alumni Week, Cases for support/proposals, Ontario universities fair booth (28 sq ft), etc.
  • Meets with clients to help assess client needs and define project deliverables and their specifications; articulates client expectations and needs and ensures they are clear, fit with overall university objectives and are well communicated; and proposes a project that corresponds with set objectives and obtains all necessary approvals before proceeding. It is imperative that the designer be a good listener and able to effectively translate client ideas and needs into strong, and effective marketing and/or communication designs that are in keeping with uOttawa's branding and Look and Feel.
  • Develops concepts and production schedules for the Manager's approval, then presents to client and manages the production and delivery. Ensures deadlines and budgets are met, approvals are obtained at each stage and that the project meets client expectations while conforming to University standards and procedures.
  • In order to effectively recommend the most suitable design concepts, the designer researches subject matters to ensure that visual presentation properly interprets contents and delivers desired impact.
What you will bring:
  • Formal training and proven abilities in graphic design, and possessing a sound understanding of graphic design principles. Knowledge of post-secondary education considered an asset.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with direct coordination of design projects, from client assessment, concept and design, to production, delivery and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of marketing and the development and use of marketing tools (print, outdoor, Web and other digital, display systems, etc.) generally acquired through post-secondary training in marketing, communication, multimedia, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Proven project management skills
  • Must have superb organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, possess good judgment, tact and diplomacy.
  • Collegial and a team player, possesses the ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
  • Proven ability to organize and execute several projects simultaneously under tight deadlines. This includes prioritizing tasks and negotiating with clients and suppliers.
  • Well versed in design software such as InDesign, Photoshop, etc. in a Mac operating environment and a good knowledge of Microsoft Office. Knowledge and experience with other software e.g. web design tools, mobile/tablet software, etc. will be considered an asset.
  • Strong French and English comprehension and spoken, with solid writing skills in at least one of the Official Languages (French or English).
