Job Summary:
The Senior Graphic Designer, located in Calgary, is a key new position in Direct Energy Canada’s growing marketing and digital team. With over 900,000 customers in Alberta, we play an important role in helping Albertans manage their energy needs.
As a Senior Graphic Designer, you are responsible for developing strategic, amazing and engaging creative for the Direct Energy brand to support all marketing and advertising initiatives. In this role, you will create electronic and printed marketing pieces such as illustrations, microsites and direct mailers. In addition, you will also help create engaging designs for our email programs. You will have access to the full Adobe Suite: InDesign, Photoshop, etc and will need to do some HTML coding in your daily projects as we do more and more digital work. A desire to work in a fast-paced environment while managing numerous projects at once is essential.
You will work very closely with our Content Marketing Manager as well who is driving a new editorial strategy for our brand. This will provide a lot of variety and creativity in design opportunities in addition to the more traditional marketing collateral tasks required.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Learn and contribute to the ongoing development of the Direct Energy brand and its visual identity
  • Meeting and communicating with clients (internal) to understand the scope of a project and know how to actualize the requests appropriately
  • Research relevant information and materials to develop concepts
  • Design a wide range of product marketing collateral such as brochures, tri-folds, technical summaries, case studies, and promotional graphics, digital assets etc.
  • Uphold the visual integrity of the brand and possess the ability to manipulate into creative solutions
  • Collaboratively work with copywriters, UX designers, and brand managers to determine our business needs
  • Ability to manage time wisely and responsibly
  • Proofread to produce accurate and high-quality work
  • Pre-flighting files for production
  • Strives to continue evolving skills and technique
  • Contributes to team efforts by accomplishing tasks as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Working Conditions:
  • Hybrid (1-2 days/week in office)
  • Some overtime and weekend work required as special projects arise
  • Travel (minimal, some Alberta)

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Graphic Communication/Fine Art, Marketing or related discipline

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of professional experience

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat)
  • Experience in PowerPoint and Excel
  • Illustrative skills would be a bonus
  • Innovative and creative portfolio
  • Video and/or animation skills are a bonus
  • Familiarity working within a project management system
  • Ability to conceptualize and communicate visually with strong typography and composition skills
  • Ability to understand and implement brand standards
  • Ability to absorb and apply constructive criticism from peers and clients
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Knowledge of pre-flighting files for production
  • Strong organizational skills with excellent time management capability
  • Have a heightened awareness of current design trends
