Position Overview

The Senior Forensic Engineer will lead Icon Global's Forensic Engineering division and oversee all technical, operational, and quality aspects of assigned files. This role involves conducting complex failure analyses, forensic investigations, and expert reporting in support of insurance claims, litigation, and private-sector assessments.

The successful candidate will combine engineering expertise with strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills, managing both field investigations and internal technical staff.

Key Responsibilities

Forensic & Technical Work

Conduct forensic investigations related to structural failures, building envelope performance, fire and impact damage, mechanical/electrical system failures, and other property-related losses. Perform on-site inspections, evidence collection, testing coordination, and technical analysis. Prepare detailed forensic engineering reports that adhere to professional standards, codes, and industry guidelines (OBC, NBCC, CSA, ASTM, etc.). Review contractor reports, scopes, and cost assessments for technical accuracy. Provide expert witness testimony in mediation, arbitration, or court when required.
Project & File Management

Manage a portfolio of active forensic files, ensuring timely delivery and quality assurance in accordance with Icon Global's procedures. Oversee internal review and approval of forensic reports, photos, drawings, and calculations. Maintain proactive communication with insurance adjusters, legal counsel, and other clients. Develop and implement workflow efficiencies, checklists, and documentation standards within the division.
Leadership & Business Development

Supervise, mentor, and support junior and intermediate engineers and technologists. Participate in strategic growth initiatives for the Forensic Division, including proposal development and client presentations. Collaborate with other Icon Global departments (Building Consulting, Environmental, Cost Consulting) to deliver integrated project solutions. Contribute to the firm's reputation for technical excellence and rapid response in the property loss and forensic engineering sector.
Qualifications

Education & Licensing

Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution. P.Eng. license in Ontario (PEO) required; eligibility for interprovincial mobility preferred. Graduate studies, forensic specialization, or relevant certifications (e.g., NAFI, ACTAR, IAAI, or similar) considered an asset.
Experience

Minimum 8-12 years of progressive engineering experience, including at least 5 years in forensic investigation or failure analysis. Demonstrated experience handling insurance claim files, expert reports, and/or litigation support. Strong knowledge of building codes, construction practices, materials science, and loss causation analysis. Familiarity with cost validation, scope development, and post-loss reconstruction methodologies an asset.
Skills & Attributes

Exceptional technical writing and documentation ability. Strong interpersonal and client management skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously. Sound judgment and professional ethics in sensitive or litigious contexts. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD or Bluebeam, and relevant engineering software.
