Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto's subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Reporting to the Manager, Revenue Accounting & Analysis, our office is looking for a Senior Financial Analyst to perform month-end and year-end activities to ensure complete, accurate and timely financial reporting, deliver financial analysis and reports, develop and document processes for the new project/initiative, and recommend/implement process and control improvements to achieve operational excellence.
What will I be doing?

  • Perform month-end and year-end activities including preparing journal entries, performing account reconciliations, investigating variances, and taking corrective actions.
  • Develop and maintain financial models to deliver financial reports and analysis to meet internal and external reporting needs; provide strong support to other business units and facilitate senior management decision-making.
  • Proactively identify incidents/problems and raise them in the appropriate channels to ensure they are resolved, and the necessary steps are taken to prevent them from reoccurring.
  • Participate in project and new initiative work to raise financial reporting requirements, provide subject matter expertise regarding the impacts on financial reporting or financial system; develop and document process and control to ensure financial reporting requirements are met.
  • Recommend and implement process and control improvements (e.g., automating technology or accounting practices) and provide clear standards of practice, protocols, and direction for internal and external partners.
  • Work closely with auditors and others, to maintain financial integrity of the business and increase understanding of financial applications, controls, and standards.
  • Preparing accurate and timely budgets and forecasts for Revenue Accounting department, monitoring results versus budget/ forecast, and providing a thorough analysis and investigating variances while identifying risks and opportunities.
What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
  • Completion of a degree in Accounting, Finance, Math, Commerce, or related field or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent.
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation and MBA would be considered as an asset.
  • Demonstrated progressive experience as a Financial Analyst and be familiar with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Knowledge of business practices, financial analysis; understand the financial and accounting impact of business processes to evaluate all business activities (e.g., audit, legal, and reporting requirements).
  • Experience with Power BI best practices and design principles (e.g., connect, transform, and load data, data visualization)
  • Experience with SQL and MS Access in developing and optimizing database queries to enhance efficient data retrieval processes, taking a lead role in managing and maintaining databases while ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and security of financial data
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to present commentary, reports, and presentations on financial analysis to senior management
