Job Description


As a key member of the Fibre Engineering team led by the Senior Manager, the Senior Fibre Engineer will focus on planning for both fibre access and long-haul networks. They will contribute to the review and development of PON and support structure architectures while serving as an expert in FTTP planning and engineering. A deep comprehension of capital efficiency and FTTx design-build cost economics is essential for this role. By collaborating with internal stakeholders and vendors, the Senior Fibre Engineer will work to optimize operations through the establishment of engineering standards and processes, while also adhering to regulatory compliance.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Plan fibre access network by mapping all available surface features, utility poles and field data and leveraging fibre planning and optimization tool.
  • Plan fibre access network with optimized fttx architecture to maximize electronics efficiencies.
  • Periodically review and identify any issues with the current technical standards and recommend solutions that ensure it aligns with best practice.
  • Work with the XCI National Standards team to review and develop fttx architecture for capital effectiveness and network optimization.
  • Model, simulate and analyze available data to develop design-build assumptions, regional specific recommendations, material forecast, and overall project cost.
  • Generate fibre access network planning tactical plan documents per the XCI access network planning delivery checklist.
  • Develop a critical path for the project by working with internal XCI stakeholders and external permitting authorities like utility companies, Municipalities, Ministries of transportation and Railway companies.
  • Perform work in compliance with up-to-date Safety Codes, Electric Codes, CSA standards, municipal bylaws and current XCI standards and best practices.
  • Provide technical support to the build team during the design and construction stage by making recommendations due to field conditions while still maintaining all project and permit requirements.
  • Review, test, and recommend new or existing optical network components and analyze how these components impact the performance and cost of the overall network.
  • Impart engineering knowledge and encourage the professional development of engineers and technical staff.
  • Maintain knowledge of technology in use and/or under development for its impact or potential impact on the FTTx access network.
  • Employee may be asked to perform other ancillary or related duties as required to meet the ongoing needs of XCI
The ideal candidate will possess:
  • Post-Secondary degree in engineering
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer in Canada
  • 8+ years of experience in telecommunications access network planning and outside plant engineering.
  • Strong understanding of Fttx network architecture\'s impact on cost economics.
  • Strong knowledge of Safety Codes, Electric Codes, CSA standards, municipal bylaws and specific power utility pole attachment requirements.
  • Experience in optical fibre characterization and specifications.
  • Experience with optical test equipment, including OTDR, PMD, Optical Spectrum Analyzer
  • Working knowledge of fibre construction methods and how they impact permits and the project\'s overall cost.
  • Ability to use AutoCAD with specialized toolsets, network planning and optimization modelling software, ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS, and Microsoft 365.
  • Ability to analyze data and utilize it to make sound engineering and business decision.
  • Detail-oriented, proven accuracy with reporting, results-focused and the ability to organize and manage multiple projects.
  • Knowledge of optical network components and how they impact the overall performance and cost of the network.
  • Ability to work within a dynamic team and cross-functional collaboration with strong verbal and written communication skills.
Working Conditions
  • Remote or Hybrid or normal office hours
  • Moderate travel as required
  • General working hours Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
