After successful completion of training and your designation as a Provincial Officer, you will:

Lead major environmental engineering projects

-- Oversee complex, multi-year initiatives like site cleanups and remediation, ensuring they meet technical, legal, and environmental standards.

Be an engineering expert for the ministry

-- Provide trusted technical advice, represent the ministry in hearings and public forums, and guide decisions with sound engineering judgment.

Solve environmental compliance challenges

-- Investigate pollution issues, assess risks, and develop practical, regulation-aligned solutions to protect people and ecosystems.

Manage consultants and contracts effectively

-- Write project specs, evaluate proposals, and ensure external partners deliver high-quality, cost-effective work.

Engage and collaborate with diverse stakeholders

-- Communicate clearly with municipalities, Indigenous communities, and the public, translating complex data into actionable insights and building consensus.


Please note: The position also requires travel, including to remote locations through various modes of transportation as well as working in the field under varied weather and climate conditions.

Mandatory requirements



You are a Professional Engineer, licensed with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) The position requires the successful candidate to have a valid G license or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that s/he has a valid driver's license upon being hired.

Engineering Expertise & Environmental Remediation:



Demonstrated knowledge and application of civil, chemical, or environmental engineering principles, especially in contaminated site remediation, pollution control, and risk management. Ability to assess and implement abatement programs, review engineering designs, and ensure compliance with environmental legislation and standards.

Project and Contract Management:



Proven experience managing large, multi-year, multi-disciplinary engineering projects, including planning, budgeting, scheduling, and overseeing consultants and contractors. Knowledge of procurement practices and contract administration to ensure timely and cost-effective project delivery.

Regulatory and Policy Interpretation:



In-depth understanding of relevant legislation (e.g., Environmental Protection Act, Environmental Assessment Act, OHSA) and ability to interpret and apply these in technical and compliance contexts. Experience preparing regulatory documents (e.g., Certificates of Property Use, Orders) and contributing to policy development.

Communication, Stakeholder Engagement, and Negotiation:



Interpersonal and communication skills to liaise with diverse stakeholders, including municipalities, Indigenous communities, consultants, and the public. Ability to present technical information clearly, provide expert testimony, and negotiate in contentious or adversarial settings.

Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills



Ability to analyze complex environmental and engineering data, assess risks, and develop innovative, evidence-based solutions. Experience conducting investigations, reviewing risk assessments, and recommending mitigation strategies.
