Job Description

The Centre for Academic Technology (CAT) at The University of Winnipeg provides campus wide leadership, direction, training, services and support for a broad range of technologies used in teaching, learning, research, and administration. CAT seeks a full-time continuing Senior Electronic and Instrumentation Technologist to provide in-house support for scientific and electronic instrumentation, equipment and technologies.
Responsibilities:

  • Install, configure, maintain, troubleshoot, calibrate and repair a wide variety of scientific lab equipment. This includes:
  • Major scientific data acquisition and processing systems such as nuclear magnetic resonance systems, spectroscopy systems, and chromatography systems.
  • Stand-alone scientific instruments such as differential scanning calorimeter, thermogravimetric analysis instrumentation, simultaneous difference thermal analysis instrumentation, graphite furnace atomic absorption, ph meters, conductivity bridges, refractometers, membrane and vapour pressure osmometers, ultra centrifuge (
50,000rpm) and turbo molecular pumps (
100,000 rpm), polarimeters, diode arrays, lasers, strip chart recorders, heating and cooling systems, densitometers, freeze dryers, vacuum systems, spectrofluorometer, viscometers, cryogenic systems, capillary electrophoresis, and x-ray diffraction equipment, and balances. * Electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers, power supplies, multimeters, and frequency generators.
  • Installs, configures, maintains and troubleshoots desktop PC operating systems used to control scientific equipment and/or process data from scientific equipment.
  • Includes unique scientific equipment application specific software such as the HPLC and NMR often through self-teaching and study of unfamiliar software or applications.
  • May require writing or modifying software code as well as knowledge of networking and databases.
  • Instructs faculty and staff on the safe use and operation of systems and equipment.
  • Provides support and updates for TSS managed servers and applications.
  • Design, prototype, test, fabricate and implement specialized electronic and mechanical devices using specialized machining equipment and electronics.
  • Out of necessity, due either to unavailability of replacement parts, or the uniqueness of requirements, designs, prototypes, tests, fabricates and implements custom electronic, electromechanical, or mechanical devices.
  • Assists in providing support on audio-visual equipment and other technologies as well as electronic repair.
  • Assists with tasks and installations associated with audio-visual and smart classroom equipment and other technologies in use on campus.
  • Plans and schedules work considering Science department requests, priorities and availability of equipment.
  • Maintains spare parts inventory required for equipment support.
  • Maintains technical files and equipment catalogues.
  • Evaluates new scientific equipment, hardware, and software and makes equipment purchase recommendations.
  • Maintains current level of technical knowledge in the areas of scientific instrumentation hardware and software, and electronics through self-study and reading, and through training and coursework where available.
Qualifications:
  • Completion of a 2 year Diploma program in Electronic, Computer, or Instrumentation Technology from an accredited post-secondary institution of technology.
  • Formal training in scientific disciplines such as chemistry and physics, training in networking, server and application support, as well as machining, welding and prototyping would be an asset.
  • CTTAM certification an asset
  • Six years directly related experience in scientific instrumentation support.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the safe use and operation of hand tools and precision powered machine shop equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the setup and operation of complex, specialized equipment in the computerized and non-computerized scientific instrumentation technology environment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Microsoft and Linux operating systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Windows servers and server based applications.
  • Knowledge & use of PC applications such as MS Word & Excel, email and utility software.
  • Well-developed troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills for interaction with clients.
  • Well-developed machining, prototyping, and welding skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (oral and written) with others.
  • Ability to work effectively with others in a team environment.
An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.
Condition(s) of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The salary range for this position will be from $71,890.00 to $99,772.40 annually.
