Atlas Power Technologies has been on a nearly 10-year journey developing and commercializing innovative energy storage technology. Specifically, we have developed a proprietary supercapacitor technology that is like a battery but has very significant inherent advantages. Supercapacitors offer incredibly long cycle life, generally over 1 million cycles, versus only a few hundred to a few thousand for batteries. Additionally, they offer the fastest charging and discharging speeds of any energy storage technology available today.
These advantages make supercapacitors a premium technology and form the basis for the business development of our company. Born from long-term collaborations with two of Canada's top universities (Simon Fraser University & The University of British Columbia), we have developed proprietary and leading chemistries and systems for supercapacitor energy storage for various applications.
Now in the commercial demonstration phase of our journey we are fortunate to have industrial titans taking notice of our company and joining our team, serving as board members and investors. Having raised significant capital over the last few years, Atlas Power has been able to advance and move into its next phase of rapid growth.
The Role
We're looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer with a deep understanding of battery management systems (BMS), microgrids, power electronics, and embedded system design. This is a hands-on role with a strong R&D and systems engineering component, ideal for someone who has led complex hardware projects from concept through to field deployment.
You'll contribute to the architecture and integration of supercapacitor energy storage systems (SC-ESS), develop advanced Battery Management solutions, and play a leading role in our hardware engineering efforts.
This lead will be responsible for fostering collaboration between our engineering team and key stakeholders. You will actively contribute to the electrical and controls design of battery management systems that incorporate functional safety systems for superacapacitor energy storage systems.
Additionally, your role will include proposing and evaluating cost-effective design modifications, ensuring they align with the overall system design, functionality, safety integration level, and reliability. Active participation in industry conferences and collaboration with safety standard bodies will be integral to contributing to the development of cutting-edge product in the field.
The Responsibilities
This position reports to the Engineering Manager and involves the following responsibilities:
Lead the comprehensive design and development of Battery Management System (BMS) hardware and controls for grid-scale supercapacitor Energy Storage Systems, encompassing module-level and system-level architecture.
Lead safety system risk assessments, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Hazard Mitigation Analysis (HMA) efforts from a BMS protection perspective.
Oversee design tasks, including creating architecture drawings for circuit board design, control systems, SCADA systems and safety systems.
Design system-level control circuits, communication protocols, safety shutdown mechanisms, medium and low voltage isolation systems, and state-of-health/state-of-charge functionalities.
Act as the technical lead for grid-scale energy storage BMS projects, creating electrical prototypes based on detailed project specifications and performance requirements.
Refine and optimize prototypes through iterative testing and feedback to enhance performance.
Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical engineers, software developers, and hardware designers, to define architectural designs and ensure seamless, integrated BMS and energy storage products.
Facilitate effective communication with key suppliers to address technical challenges and drive cost optimization
Ensure electrical and software designs meet relevant industry standards, regulatory requirements, and electrical safety codes.
Guide products through certification processes, partnering with regulatory teams to secure necessary approvals and certifications.
Develop proposals and perform cost-impact analyses for potential component changes, assessing overall system design implications and reliability.
Lead cost optimization and value engineering initiatives, identifying and implementing design improvements that enhance efficiency without compromising reliability or performance.
Knowledge Requirements
Proven experience in developing and bringing electrical products, specifically energy storage systems, to market.
In-depth knowledge and understanding of battery management architecture for compliance with functional safety requirements and energy storage systems in grid-scale applications.
Proven experience with schematic design for complex hardware systems.
Strong understanding of embedded systems, control theory, and power electronics.
Ability to lead hardware development projects, including test planning and cross-functional coordination.
Familiarity with R&D processes and equipment used in the development of energy storage systems.
Familiarity with relevant industry standards (CSA, UL, IEC) and regulations for grid-scale energy storage products.
Excellent communication skills and experience working in a collaborative R&D environment.
Strong knowledge of materials and component construction relevant to grid-scale energy storage.
Preferred:
Experience with product development compliant with functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, ISO 13849, ISO 26262.
Experience working with UL 1973, UL 9540, UL 991, UL 1998.
Experience with microgrid design, distributed generation, or community-scale energy systems.
Knowledge of supercapacitor integration and hybrid energy systems.
Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
4+ years of hands-on experience in energy storage systems, BMS design, and power electronics.
