This position plays a critical role in advancing the University of Calgary's commercial strategy. As an individual contributor, the Agreements and Revenues Sr. Director is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and supporting the execution of strategic opportunities and commercial contracts that align with institutional priorities. The role requires strong analytical, negotiation, and project management skills, and involves collaboration with internal stakeholders, legal counsel, and external partners. Peak periods may coincide with major contract negotiations, budget cycles, or strategic initiative launches.


The Strategic Finance and Enterprise Initiatives function enhances the University's financial agility and strategic positioning by applying a business-minded, opportunity-driven approach to commercial engagement, asset utilization, and partnership development. The team is responsible for framing and advancing high-impact business cases, negotiating complex agreements, and stewarding commercial ventures that align with institutional priorities and public sector values.


The Agreements and Revenues Sr. Director supports the University's commercial activities by managing the lifecycle of strategic contracts and opportunity development. This includes framing business cases, conducting market and feasibility analysis, supporting negotiations, and ensuring contracts are structured to deliver long-term value while mitigating risk. The role contributes to the institution's financial sustainability and innovation agenda through rigorous analysis, stakeholder engagement, and operational execution.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

Contracts and Opportunity Management

Lead the identification and framing of strategic opportunities aligned with institutional goals. Develop opportunities into projects and collaborate with the Project Management Office to progress projects to high quality investment decisions providing clear opportunity framing, risk assessment and mitigation planning, and alternatives considered Develop contracting strategies and feasibility studies for new commercial relationships, partnerships, and commercial initiatives. Conduct market research and regulatory scans to inform opportunity assessments. Lead/ Assist in the negotiation and execution of commercial contracts, joint ventures, and strategic agreements. Ensure contracts are structured to mitigate risk, comply with institutional policies, and deliver measurable value. Collaborate with legal, procurement, and operational teams to ensure contract compliance and performance monitoring. Track contract lifecycles, including renewals, amendments, and dispute resolution support. Maintain documentation and reporting tools to support governance and decision-making.

Strategic Support

Provide analytical support to the Office of Finance & Services and broader Finance team on strategic initiatives. Prepare briefing materials, presentations, and financial models for internal and external stakeholders. Monitor trends in commercial engagement, public-private partnerships, and higher education finance.

Qualifications / Requirements:



A degree in Business, Law, Economics, Finance, or related discipline is required; advanced credentials such as an MBA, CFA, CPA, or professional designation in law, real estate, or supply chain management are considered assets. A minimum of 10 years' progressive experience in a commercial role, business development, or strategic partnerships within a large, complex organization - preferably in the public or post-secondary sector. Demonstrated experience in contracting strategies, contract negotiation, opportunity framing, and business development. Proven ability to develop and execute business cases, assess commercial viability, and lead cross-functional initiatives from concept to implementation. Proven experience with executing significant infrastructure projects, solid understanding of the risks involved in detailed design, engineering and construction phase of projects Solid understanding of the operational consequences of decisions taken early in the project development phase. Proven experience operating infrastructure assets is an advantage Strong business acumen and strategic thinking, with the ability to balance financial, operational, and reputational considerations. Exceptional communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels, including executive leadership, external partners, and governance bodies. Recognized as a collaborative, strategic partner. You are sought out for your insights and ability to translate opportunity into action. You take a forward-looking, entrepreneurial approach to commercial engagement, delivering practical, value-added solutions across the institution. You understand and leverage the power of interpersonal communication to influence, inspire, and lead others. You are an active listener with strong verbal and written communication skills.
