Your role
We are looking for an enthusiastic Senior Digital Writer with strong journalistic skills and experience in digital news writing to join the team.
ICI Grand Nord includes a team of videojournalists and reporters located across the three Canadian territories (Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut) and in Nunavik.
The working language is French, and you will be based in Whitehorse (preferably) or Yellowknife. The office is located inside the CBC North building. You bring an understanding of the challenges inherent in the Far North and life within isolated communities, demonstrating strong resilience.
You will write and edit original articles daily for the page, dealing with stories relevant to all territories served. You will be expected to write news copy to tight deadlines and cover breaking news.
You must be able to create and co-ordinate digital news content and add relevant multimedia material to stories to enhance their value to the audience and maximize their reach. You will also be required to edit copy produced by other team members.
Additionally, you will ensure the transition and follow-up of assignments at the end of the day. You will tell a wide range of stories, touching on the environment, the economy, politics, social and Indigenous issues, and the French-speaking community.
This role requires a full-time, on-site presence, Monday to Friday. You may be required to work overtime as well as on holidays and weekends. Scheduling is subject to change based on operational needs.
Work is governed by and adheres to CBC/Radio-Canada journalistic and programming policies, standards and practices. Adopting a collaborative approach, you will attend assignment meetings with CBC North.
Work can involve the co-ordination of the activities of others, and close co-operation with reporters and videojournalists is essential.
Key tasks:
Write digital copy for daily and breaking news stories in line with ICI Grand Nords mandate.
Select photos and video/audio clips to accompany online stories.
Conduct interviews as needed to enrich web production; write copy and edit clips for other platforms as needed.
Prepare and write articles and headlines from information provided by team reporters, wire copy, English Services colleagues or original sources.
Critically edit material written by others and/or items produced by others.
Follow up on assignments at the end of the day as needed; perform all other related tasks.
Your profile:
University education (or equivalent) in journalism, communications or a related field
Five (5) years directly related experience that includes proven knowledge of online and digital news media, as well as demonstrated news writing skills
Substantial journalism experience, superior editorial judgment and thorough understanding of CBC/Radio-Canadas Journalistic Standards and Practices
Ability to quickly react and respond to breaking stories
Excellent current events knowledge, particularly the stories that matter to audiences in Canadas Far North
Knowledge of the Far North, local communities, Indigenous Peoples, Canadian politics and related issues is an asset
High degree of cultural and historical sensitivity toward the Far North
Familiarity with minority language issues and audiences
Ability to work well under pressure and handle multiple developing stories
English/French bilingualism (spoken and written)
Familiarity with in-house production tools is an asset (Dalet, MediaCentral, iNews, Scoop)
Experience and proven ability to write and edit using best practices and style for digital platforms.
