About Us

The Department of Natural Resources and Renewables is responsible for the development, management, conservation and protection of our province\'s natural resources. The Policy & Corporate Services Branch provides enabling services to these program areas. As part of this Branch, the Strategic Policy and Planning Division is a dynamic team that works in a fast-paced environment to lead the development and renewal of policy, regulations and legislation, the Department\'s business planning and accountability processes, and various inter-departmental and inter-governmental issues.

About Our Opportunity

The Strategic Policy and Planning Division of the Policy & Corporate Services Branch is looking for an experienced policy leader to join our team as a Senior Corporate Strategist. You will play an instrumental role in driving major policy initiatives in the Department supporting Government priorities. As an experienced policy leader, the Senior Corporate Strategist will contribute strong analytical, partnering and communication skills, and energy and initiative to our strategic policy and planning work.

Primary Accountabilities

As a Senior Corporate Strategist, your key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing policy leadership to support the department\'s programs and operations, strategic initiatives, business planning, and issues management;
  • Leading - from start to finish - a variety of complex policy projects, including conducting research and developing innovative solutions for complex policy decisions;
  • Working collaboratively with staff in the department\'s programs and operations and with external stakeholders to provide a broad perspective to shape and influence programs, policies, procedures, Acts and regulations related to the department\'s work; and
  • Providing leadership within the division to develop long-term strategic plans to address critical issues, contribute to planning the Department\'s legislative agenda, lead the preparation of briefing materials, and coordinate department-level responses.
About You

You have a bachelor\'s degree in a relevant field, plus several years of related progressive experience. An acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.

With a proven track record in your ability to conduct comprehensive research, analysis, measurement and evaluation of complex policy issues to formulate strategic advice to senior leadership.

You are a highly skilled communicator with experience in developing and communicating innovative solutions, options and recommendations on strategic issues to advise senior management decisions.

You have experience leading large, horizontal projects or policy initiatives (e.g., legislative/regulatory processes, departmental policy initiatives, and/or consultations) with multiple internal and external partners and interest groups.

A demonstrated history in your ability to exercise sound judgement and build strong relationships with clients, including senior management, and other stakeholders.

You have strong knowledge of public policy and a broad understanding of the multi-disciplinary issues facing the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables.

The following criteria will be considered assets:
  • Knowledge of the Department\'s shift to ecological forestry, and related commitments in the Government Response to the Independent Review of Forest Practices in Nova Scotia
  • Training and experience in project management; and
  • Training and experience coordinating public or stakeholder consultations or events, and/or facilitation.
Leadership competencies required at this level of work are: Conceptual Thinking, Strategic Orientation, Outcome Focus, Initiative, Effective Interactive Communication, Partnering and Relationship Building, and Intercultural and Diversity Proficiency.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

Work is conducted in a comfortable office setting with opportunity to move about.
High concentration of visual demands for proof reading and entering work, giving close attention to detail.
Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day.
May be required to work overtime on occasion.

Pay Grade: EC 11

Salary Range: $3,238.10 - $4,047.67 Bi-Weekly
