Job Description

The Senior Communications Specialist is responsible for the communications needs for Alberta Lawyers Indemnity Association ("

ALIA

"). This will range from developing and implementing an annual communications plan for ALIA to hands-on creation of various communications. It involves both creativity and attention to detail. Experience in creative design, marketing, project management, as well as work prioritization and organization is desired. The role will feature a variety of responsibilities including:


designing high-impact materials that effectively communicate ALIA's strategic and operational initiatives; providing strategic communications and stakeholder relations advice and support for reputation and issues management; writing, editing, and proofreading various internal and external communications and publications; developing and managing ALIA's social media presence; managing ALIA's website; coordinating webinars; maintaining templates for ALIA's documents; and assisting in overseeing related projects and initiatives.

Key Responsibilites:





The Senior Communications Specialist will:


Design and, working with content experts and conducting research if required, deliver visually appealing, clear, and informative reports including Annual Reports and quarterly Board reports. Develop and review content for various communications channels (e.g., newsletters, external websites, social media), Board presentations / PowerPoints, and some correspondence. Proofread and edit ALIA written material -- digital and hard copy -- for various audiences, ensuring accuracy of content, impeccable grammar and spelling, and consistency of style and tone. Manage the communications tools and resources for ALIA including maintaining and managing the external website. Assist in developing ALIA's strategic communications plan and support its implementation. Develop and implement communications strategies to achieve business goals and deliverables. Work effectively with key external stakeholders including the legal profession. Provide input into business plans and budgets to support overall communications processes. Provide strategic communications and stakeholder relations advice for engagement initiatives. Work with ALIA leadership in managing communications and stakeholder relations issues, including developing media strategies and key messages. Adhere to and uphold the ALIA brand to champion the organization's reputation. Work with appropriate team members in planning and executing special events, including creating interesting materials for events as required. Select, retain, and manage external experts as required. Manage special projects and assignments as required.

Qualifications:




Degree in Communications, Journalism, or English preferred. A degree in a related field or significant professional experience will be considered. 5+ years of relevant communications experience and demonstrated ability. Exceptional writing skills and expertise writing for a range of media including newsletters, e-communications, websites, reports, social media, stakeholder engagement, etc. Extraordinary attention to detail, highly organized, and conscientious. Skills in web content management systems (WordPress, SharePoint). Strong computer skills, including expertise in MS Office (specifically Word and PowerPoint). Proficiency with email marketing tools (Constant Contact). Experience with and knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite. Proven experience in developing and implementing communications strategies. Project management skills, with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines under pressure. Ability to provide strategic advice to senior leaders. Ability to adapt to and understand the communications needs of an evolving organization with external and internal stakeholders. Experience in stakeholder engagement. Video/photo shooting and editing skills an asset but not required. Highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to review communications programs and make recommendations for improvements in efficiency and customer service delivery. Ability to exercise self-direction and initiative in undertaking assigned projects. Interested in and capable of growing to meet additional challenges that may be added to this position over time. Potential to work overtime if required, including but not limited to, attendance at after-hour events, during emerging issues, etc.

Alberta Lawyers Indemnity Association (ALIA) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Law Society of Alberta, created to manage the mandatory indemnity program for Alberta lawyers.



ALIA administers professional liability and misappropriation claims and manages the mandatory indemnity program for Alberta lawyers. This includes the examination and review of claims, hiring of external lawyers to litigate claims and settlement of claims when appropriate.



All Alberta lawyers in private practice ("

Subscribers

") must purchase mandatory indemnity coverage through ALIA. ALIA recommends that all Subscribers (or their law firms) consider purchasing additional insurance (e.g. excess insurance an employee theft insurance) to address those risks. Excess insurance coverage is voluntary and is available through commercial brokers and the Canadian Lawyers Insurance Association.
