Senior Communications Officer, Intergovernmental Forum On Mining, Minerals, Metals And Sustainable Development (igf)

Winnipeg, MB, Canada

Job Description

About IISD
The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is an award-winning independent think tank working to accelerate solutions for a stable climate, sustainable resource management, and fair economies. Our work inspires better decisions and sparks meaningful action to help people and the planet thrive. IISD's staff of more than 300 experts come from across the globe and from many disciplines. With offices in Winnipeg, Geneva, Ottawa, and Toronto, our work affects lives in nearly 100 countries.
About the IGF
The Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) supports more than 80 member countries committed to leveraging mining for sustainable development while limiting its negative impacts. We work with governments to optimize the benefits of mining to advance sustainable development, including through policy guidance, capacity building, and dialogue. A key moment each year is the IGF Annual General Meeting (AGM), where governments, industry, and civil society come together to share knowledge and shape the future of sustainable mining.
About the Position
We are seeking a Senior Communications Officer to lead communications for the IGF Mining Team. This is a pivotal role that combines strategic communications, brand positioning, media outreach, digital engagement, and event communications. The role is critical in amplifying IGF's voice globally, shaping narratives on mining and sustainable development, and ensuring that the Forum's work resonates with governments, industry, media, civil society, and the wider public. The Senior Communications Officer will also support IGF's flagship event--the AGM. The successful candidate will make complex policy issues accessible to global audiences, strengthen engagement with IGF's member states and partners, highlight the impact of funders' support, and help IGF stand out in a crowded space.
The Senior Communications Officer will supervise junior staff and collaborate closely with IISD's Communications team. This role requires excellent organizational skills, strong writing and editing ability, experience with digital media, and familiarity with member-based organizations or multilateral processes.
Responsibilities
Strategic Communications and Leadership

  • Develop and implement strategic communications plans for IGF projects, reports, and events, including the AGM.
  • Serve as a communications advisor to IGF senior staff, providing guidance on messaging and outreach to ensure clarity, impact, and resonance with diverse audiences.
  • Supervise junior staff, including setting objectives and conducting performance reviews.
  • Ensure brand coherence and compliance across all IGF materials and platforms.
Content Development and Outreach
  • Produce and edit compelling and high-quality written and digital content (press releases, articles, newsletters, social media posts, videos, infographics) for expert and non-expert audiences.
  • Maintain and update IGF webpages (WordPress/Drupal), ensuring content is timely and accurate.
  • Oversee development of visual and multimedia products, coordinating with consultants and IISD's design team as needed.
  • Support IGF staff in communicating research and policy messages effectively, including through media training and social media coaching.
Media and Public Engagement
  • Cultivate and manage relationships with journalists and influencers to secure coverage of IGF initiatives in target geographies.
  • Draft, edit, and disseminate press releases, media briefings, and pitches; track and analyze media coverage to refine strategies.
  • Ensure IGF social media channels are timely, engaging, and targeted, reporting regularly on reach and performance.
  • Organize and promote webinars, workshops, and especially the IGF AGM, ensuring effective outreach, onsite communications, and post-event follow-up.
Monitoring and Reporting
  • Use analytics tools (Google Analytics, Agility PR, social platform insights) to monitor and report on performance, identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Develop high-quality donor and impact reports that clearly demonstrate IGF's achievements, outcomes, and value for funders.
Other Duties
  • Stay current on best practices in communications and share insights to strengthen IGF and IISD approaches.
  • Provide support on emerging needs and opportunities as directed by the IGF Director and the Economic Law and Policy Senior Communications Manager.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, public relations, public policy, or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in communications, journalism, or public relations, ideally related to international policy or sustainable development.
  • Bilingual English/French. Excellent English and French verbal and written communication skills; Spanish an asset.
  • Proven experience managing communications for international, member-based, or multilateral organizations.
  • Strong experience with digital platforms, including content management systems (WordPress or Drupal), analytics tools, and social media management.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, manage, and deliver communications strategies around large international events.
