Position Summary
The Pembina Institute is seeking a highly motivated Senior Communications Lead to join the Communities and Decarbonization Group, which encompasses three programs: Buildings, Equitable Transition and Transportation. You are a strong writer and editor, and consistently bring strategic thinking to your work. You are a team player with strong interpersonal skills, positive energy, high degree of organization and ability to thrive in a fast-moving environment. You will provide on-demand and strategic communications support to advance the Pembina Institute\xe2\x80\x99s work on priorities nationally and regionally, as well as organizational communications support as needed. In this role you will contribute to the ongoing development, delivery and evaluation of the Pembina Institute\xe2\x80\x99s approach to communications.
Roles and Responsibilities
Offer strategic planning to support the design of communications initiatives for national and provincial priorities (developing communications strategy and tactics, identifying target audiences and appropriate communications for each, updating core strategic communications documents annually, adhering to procedures, developing timelines, framing/messaging, debriefing, metrics reporting and effectiveness evaluation, etc.)
Support the planning and development stage of projects and deliverables to ensure proposals incorporate communications strategy early in the process.
Deliver ongoing communications project work (delivering on strategic communications planning objectives, media and stakeholder outreach materials, planning, guiding staff through materials production, review and sign-off, etc.)
Write media releases, statements, op-eds, blogs, elements of reports if required, and provide proofreading and editing to the team (copy, technical, style), ensuring deliverables are consistent with Pembina\xe2\x80\x99s quality standards and branding.
Media relations
Act as the first point of contact for journalists on policy priorities, as determined.
Respond to media inquiries and coordinate interview logistics with Pembina spokespeople.
Proactively build and maintain relationships with key reporters and building Pembina\xe2\x80\x99s profile in Canada and at the provincial level.
Promote Pembina\xe2\x80\x99s work related to regional and assigned national priorities to media through targeted means, including corresponding with journalists via Salesforce and on social media.
Field media calls in Pembina\xe2\x80\x99s relevant time zones (Pacific, Mountain and Eastern Time), handling phone and email requests from journalists.
Maintain accurate contact records in Salesforce for media related to assigned priorities.
General communications support
Assist the Communications Director to articulate processes on communications work to staff, tracking industry best practices, and identifying gaps and opportunities.
Provide support as needed to other communications leads for general communications work, including maintaining website and social media channels, promoting project work, editing and production assistance, media relations, vacation or work overload coverage (at the request of the Senior Director and/or Communications Director).
Participate in regular communications planning and co-ordination meetings, and in the organizational communications network to collaborate on messaging, framing, strategy, marketing and outreach to target audiences/influencers.
Contribute to the research, development and maintenance of a comprehensive set of communications skills and tools to support Pembina\xe2\x80\x99s communications projects (working closely with the Senior Director, Communications Director and other staff as needed).
Essential Skills and Qualifications
Candidates must clearly reflect (with examples) the following skills and experience in their application:
Three or more years of work experience in journalism; seven or more years of work overall in journalism, communications, marketing or a related field.
Experience developing and executing communications strategy and/or plans.
Familiarity with the national and/or regional media markets relevant to the priority area.
Attention to detail and a commitment to personal excellence.
A superb command of the English language (reading, writing and speaking).
Proven skills and experience in media relations, digital engagement, popular communications, technical and copy editing, social media, online publishing and multimedia.
Demonstrated knowledge of CP style and academic grammar and style conventions.
Demonstrated familiarity with various social media tools, platforms (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube) and strategies.
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office programs in a Teams environment.
Familiarity with basic HTML editing, blogging and online publishing.
Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to exercise tact, discretion and sound judgment at all times.
Other Valuable Qualifications
Experience using social media to build community and/or advocacy campaigns.
Ability to evaluate projects based on desired outcomes and develop strategies for improving results in the future.
Post-secondary education in communications, marketing, media relations or journalism.
French language proficiency (speaking and writing).
Familiarity with Salesforce, Pardot or similar CRM software.
Salary is commensurate with experience. The hiring salary range for the position is $70,000 to $80,000 annually, with a position salary maximum of $90,000, increasing with acquired skills and experience in the role. The Pembina Institute operates on a 37.5-hour work week and provides flex hours and a hybrid work environment where our staff are invited to strike the optimal mix of working in the office and from home.
