Balancing the perspectives of both risk management and business development, this role helps bridge the gap between the sales and credit functions -- ensuring that lending solutions meet member needs while protecting the Credit Union's risk position. The Senior Commercial Analyst applies strong analytical judgment, negotiation skills, and creativity in deal structuring to find solutions that work for all parties.

This position combines analytical depth with practical insight in ensuring disciplined underwriting, early identification of risk, and enhanced portfolio performance. The Senior Commercial Analyst also contributes to workflow modernization and process efficiency initiatives, enabling scalability and strong member service delivery.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

--------------------------------------

Underwriting and Credit Analysis

Prepare, analyze and structure complex commercial and agricultural credit applications for approval. Conduct comprehensive financial and risk assessments, including cash flow analysis, ratio interpretation, and collateral evaluation. Prepare high-quality credit submissions and recommendations aligned with credit policy and regulatory requirements. Collaborate with Relationship Managers to develop credit solutions that balance member needs and risk mitigation. Ensure all credit decisions are consistent with internal lending policies and Mainstreet's risk appetite.

Portfolio Monitoring and Annual Reviews

Conduct and coordinate annual credit reviews, ensuring they are completed within policy timelines. Monitor assigned portfolios for performance, emerging risks, and early warning indicators. Identify and track Watchlist or higher-risk accounts, assisting in remediation and risk mitigation plans. Maintain accurate and current financial information and member data for reporting purposes.

Risk Management Support

Promote disciplined and consistent underwriting practices across the commercial lending function. Assist the Commercial Lending Manager in reviewing portfolio performance metrics and trend analysis. Support policy and procedure development by providing insights from portfolio findings and underwriting experience.

Process and Operational Improvement

Partner with the Commercial Lending Manager to identify and implement process and workflow enhancements that increase efficiency and accuracy. Contribute to the development of standardized templates, tools, and checklists for underwriting and annual reviews. Support the adoption of technology and reporting improvements that enhance turnaround times and portfolio oversight. Assist with data analysis and reporting related to credit metrics, trends, and performance.

Collaboration and Mentorship

Act as a technical resource, sharing best practices in underwriting and portfolio management. Work collaboratively with Relationship Managers, Lending Administration, Risk, and Finance teams to ensure seamless end-to-end service delivery. Support relationship teams in preparing and reviewing documentation and ensuring compliance with regulatory and internal requirements. Contribute to a culture of continuous learning and collaboration within the Commercial Lending department. Process Orientation: Focused on improving efficiency, accuracy, and consistency in underwriting and review processes. Mentorship: Willingness to coach and support less experienced team members. Professionalism and Integrity: Maintains confidentiality, fairness, and accountability in all dealings.

Qualifications and Experience:

----------------------------------

Post-secondary degree or diploma in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field, or 5-7 years of progressive experience in Commercial and Agricultural lending, credit underwriting, or portfolio management with a financial institution. Proven ability to structure and negotiate complex commercial and agricultural transactions, balancing member needs and credit union risk with a focus on Construction Financing, Land Bank or Multiunit Residential Income Generating Assets. Strong working knowledge of credit risk frameworks, regulatory guidelines, and commercial credit Policies & Procedures. Demonstrated experience in restructuring or turnaround lending, including recommending alternative security, covenant, or repayment structures. Familiarity with relationship management dynamics between lending, risk, and member-facing teams. Thorough understanding of the Credit Union's business strategies, products and services. Proficiency in financial analysis software, Excel, and loan origination systems.
Join Mainstreet Credit Union and be part of a workplace that values diversity, promotes equity, and fosters inclusion. We actively seek diverse perspectives, ensure equal opportunities for all, and cultivate a culture where every individual feels valued.
