The opportunity

We are currently seeking a Senior AVP & Team Lead to lead the Commercial Special Asset Management Unit team. This leader will report directly to the Vice President, Special Asset Management Unit and be responsible for direct management of the largest and most complex unsatisfactory files, adjudication of large commercial files managed and underwritten by the team of direct reports and providing support and file direction to the team on an individual basis as well as at a portfolio level. The successful incumbent will provide strategic file leadership and direction, coaching, oversight, and guidance in managing through identified commercial high-risk accounts and borrowings across Canadian Western Bank. The role will lead an experienced team of professionals who manage the highly sensitive nature of these relationships and the intricate credit administration and monitor and control requirements in addition to deep engagement with 3rd party service providers. This individual will act as a critical partner in managing commercial, high-risk borrowing by minimizing Canadian Western Bank\xe2\x80\x99s overall risk, with a focus towards the rehabilitation of the commercial clients lending relationship.

Areas of focus

Risk Mitigation

Responsible for the overall day-to-day management (of assigned accounts), adjudication (of team managed accounts) and strategic management direction (including restructure and recovery) of high-risk portfolio to achieve an acceptable level of risk or to maximize recovery of capital.

High degree of oversight through the team on watch and impaired commercial loans. Also provides lower-level oversight and direction to Branch Lenders as required on Watch list accounts.

Responsible for identifying deteriorating situations within the high-risk commercial portfolio that can result in material risk/losses to the organization.

Relationship Management

Navigate and guide staff through complex and highly sensitive commercial client relationships, with a focus on retention and rehabilitation, balancing the risk and interests of the organization.

Maintain expert knowledge of commercial clients and prospects, market, competition, and economic factors, in conjunction with a robust understanding of key business issues and trends.

Identify and respond to changes in the business environment, establishing strategic action plans to address commercial client\xe2\x80\x99s issues and priorities.

Reporting

Responsible for transparent reporting requirements on the high-risk commercial portfolio, that meets internal and regulatory controls.

Accountable for internal reporting requirements and activity on day-to-day management of high-risk commercial portfolio.

Accountable for completing the adjudication and review of underwriting (RAS), Watch List or Impaired Reports for commercial accounts under team management, providing authorizations / recommendations including fulsome action plans for review and approval.

Leadership

Deliver effective hiring, talent development, performance management and reward processes and programs across areas of responsibility that positively affect attraction, motivation, engagement, and retention of best-in-class talent.

Provide responsive, positive, and constructive leadership coaching, mentorship and direction to direct and indirect reports.

Qualifications & competencies

Undergraduate degree in commerce, finance or accounting disciplines, including a degree / designation (MBA, CFA, CBV, CPA) or commensurate experience required.

Minimum of ten (10) years relationship management background in large (Commercial, Real Estate and Equipment Finance) including syndications, including two (2) years direct experience managing problem accounts and work-out situations.

Minimum five (5) years of credit adjudication (Commercial, Real Estate and Equipment Finance) with a focus on higher dollar value transactions ($10MM +).

Minimum five (5) years of senior management / leadership (large team management).

Working knowledge of Moody\xe2\x80\x99s Financial Analyst with strong computer skills including working knowledge of Excel, Word, T24, WAVE and Adobe Forms.

Exceptional skills in client engagement and retention, with a best for clients focus.

Strong organizational, analytical, negotiation and mediation skills.

Expert level experience with financial statement analysis and accounting software programs.

Understanding of legal issues around insolvency, BIA and CCAA.

Proven coaching and leadership skills.
