Job Description

INTRO
CNL's Applied Physics Branch explores and investigates the development and applications of radiation based systems and detectors, including performing experiments, developing physics models and simulations, and building, testing, and evaluating prototypes or third-party devices. Work is performed in a variety of science and technology areas with particular emphasis on applications for nuclear Safety and Security. The Applied Physics Branch reports to the Safety and Security Directorate.

Within the area of Safety and Security, the Applied Physics Branch pursues senior expertise and leadership to maintain and grow CNL's position in: nuclear instrumentation (detector design, development, and testing), electronics expertise, Monte Carlo simulations and modelling (e.g., GEANT4 simulation of novel detectors or systems), algorithm development, data analysis, and radiation system/equipment testing.

DUTIES
The Senior Applied Physicist will report to the Applied Physics Branch Manager, and have the following responsibilities:

  • Lead medium to large groups of scientific and technical staff in highly technical applications, and is responsible for the motivation and guidance of the team and their technical output.
  • Mentor science & technology staff.
  • Identify new opportunities as a result of scientific investigations and leads R&D activities to exploit new prospects. Organize, manage, and propose projects in support of CNL's areas of research and commercial prospects in alignment with the mission of the Safety and Security Directorate.
  • Propose and develop new characterization systems and methods for nuclear safeguards and forensics applications. This can include developing and effectively articulating novel ideas, concepts, and proposals for new projects for existing or proposed new customers.
  • Has the ability to handle experimental and computational physics problems; devise new approaches, apply existing criteria in new manners, and draw complex conclusions.
  • Help CNL to transform cutting edge and promising technologies of academic pursuits to addressing challenges related to nuclear safety and security.
  • Coordinate work across directorates and provide technical support, leadership and mentoring to staff and projects led by the other directorates in coordination with the Safety and Security Directorate. The other directorates are: Advanced Reactors; Isotopes, Radiobiology & Environment; Hydrogen & Tritium Technologies; and Reactor Fleet Sustainability.
  • Provide advice on strategic direction, planning, and coordination of major research programs.
  • Provide presentations to stakeholders and contribute to technical refereed journal publications.
  • Other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ph.D. in a Physics from a university of recognized standing,
  • Have a minimum of 15 years of experience in subatomic physics or a related field, with an established publication history.
  • Practical knowledge and hands-on experience with computer hardware and software required for nuclear, particle, or radiation physics experiments and applications.
  • Proven experience in designing, building, operating, and optimizing complex detection systems for alpha and neutron particles.
  • Demonstrated experience in applying fundamental physics phenomena, such as superheated liquid and acoustic waves, for detection of elementary particles and radiation.
  • Excellent skills in troubleshooting physics experiments, data analysis, interpretation, and reporting.
  • Strong knowledge of detector hardware and electronics experience is required, such as configuring VME, CAMAC, and/or NIM data acquisition systems.
  • Strong technical problem solving skills, particularly with multi-disciplinary teams and challenges, make recommendations on technical issues, and prepare work plans with minimal supervision.
  • Proven leadership experience leading scientific and technical staff in the accomplishment of scientific endeavours and in the application of applied research for internal or external customers.
  • Good computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets. Good analytical, documentation and communication skills
  • History of working carefully, safely, and accurately, with good knowledge of and commitment to quality assurance
  • Knowledge of the utility and application of Monte Carlo methods would be an asset.
  • Computing background with a working knowledge of C/C++, Python, ROOT, and UNIX/Linux operating systems would be an asset.
This role is based out of CNL's Chalk River site, however, the primary work location will be remote. This role will require some regular and frequent attendance at the Chalk River site. The schedule and frequency will be determined by discussions with the hiring manager as well as internal client and project needs. CNL may require the successful candidate to travel from time to time, as necessary.
