Job Description

LiftWerx is a specialized wind energy contractor which performs large corrective repairs, utilizing both ground-based cranes as well as up-tower cranes. LiftWerx offers both specialized equipment and experienced personnel to perform corrective repairs on a wide variety of wind turbines.

This role is an on-site position based out of our office in Cambridge, ON.

Responsibilities



Payroll Tax Management



Manage non-resident payroll tax compliance for employees working across Canada and the US. Ensure proper withholding calculations and remittances for cross-border workers. Navigate complex jurisdictional issues related to tax residency and treaty benefits. Coordinate with payroll teams to implement proper tax withholdings and reporting. Handle state and provincial payroll tax registrations and ongoing compliance.

Indirect Tax Compliance



Oversee sales and use tax compliance across multiple US states. Manage HST/GST compliance, registrations, and filings in Canada. Conduct nexus studies and assess sales tax obligations in new jurisdictions. Implement and maintain indirect tax technology solutions. Handle voluntary disclosure agreements and audit defense for indirect taxes.

Corporate Tax Management



Review and file federal and state corporate income tax returns in the US prepared by external tax consultants. Oversee Canadian corporate tax return review and filings including federal and provincial returns prepared by external tax consultants. Manage comprehensive transfer pricing documentation and compliance for intercompany transactions. Develop and maintain transfer pricing policies for cross-border related party transactions. Review and file transfer pricing studies and contemporaneous documentation prepared by external advisors. Coordinate tax provision calculations and ASC 740 compliance. Handle corporate tax audits and examinations in both countries.

Strategic Tax Planning



Develop and implement tax-efficient structures for cross-border operations. Design and implement transfer pricing strategies aligned with business operations. Provide guidance on tax implications of business transactions and restructuring. Analyze transfer pricing implications of new business arrangements and restructuring initiatives. Research complex tax issues and provide recommendations to senior management. Stay current with changing tax laws and regulations in both jurisdictions, including OECD transfer pricing guidelines. Collaborate with and manage external tax advisors and consultants. Maintain professional relationships with service providers.

Process Management & Coordination



Manage relationships with external tax consultants and service providers. Develop and maintain tax compliance calendars and workflows. Implement process improvements and automation initiatives. Ensure proper documentation and support for all tax positions. Coordinate with finance, legal, and HR teams on tax-related matters.

Experience & Education



Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA designation preferred. Minimum 7-10 years of progressive tax experience. Extensive experience with both US and Canadian tax systems. Strong background in transfer pricing, including documentation preparation and economic analysis. Previous experience with non-resident payroll tax issues. Strong background in indirect tax compliance (sales tax, HST/GST). Corporate tax return review and filing experience in both jurisdictions. Public accounting or multinational corporation experience preferred.

Technical Skills



Experience with Vertex or Avalara tax platforms. Experience with payroll systems and tax technology platforms. Advanced Excel skills and data analysis capabilities. Knowledge of tax research tools and databases.

Preferred Qualifications



Experience with tax technology implementation and automation. Transfer pricing experience including economic analysis and benchmarking studies. OECD transfer pricing guidelines and country-by-country reporting experience. Previous audit and examination defense experience, particularly for transfer pricing matters. Experience with Microsoft Dynamics Business Central or similar ERP systems.
