Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the permanent full-time position of Security Supervisor, Alderney Campus in the Corporate Security division of Property, Fleet & Environment. Under the direction of the Manager, Corporate Security, the Security Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the consolidated security portfolio at the Alderney Gate complex and managing day-to-day security operations on site. The position supervises a team of contracted security guards and liaises with the various HRM Business Units and tenants to ensure safety of the complex for all users. The Supervisor also works closely with police to aid investigations, as well as Community Safety to resolve public safety issues onsite. As part of this requirement, the Security Supervisor may be required to meet with prosecutors and provide court testimony. The position may also require being on call to assist with high profile investigations or events and working after hours and/or weekends. This position requires strong leadership skills, excellent interpersonal communications skills, the ability to work independently with minimal supervision and knowledge of security technology, policies, and procedures.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides leadership, direction, training, and ongoing coaching to the on-site team of contracted security guards.
  • Monitors onsite security systems and equipment to ensure systems are functioning properly. Submits service requests, as required, through the HRM work order management system.
  • Resolves and tracks security incidents/issue onsite.
  • Deals with trespassers and unauthorized persons found on the property, in a fair and safe manner, by enforcing the Protection of Property Act.
  • Maintains ongoing communications and works with the various HRM Business Units and tenants onsite, as well as the HRM Special Events team, to coordinate security services and manage security issues.
  • Communicates with and provides assistance to members of the public.
  • Collaborates with HRM staff, Halifax Regional Police and/or HRM Corporate Security regarding security incidents.
  • Responds to site emergencies in a lead capacity, while awaiting arrival of emergency services and/or a senior HRM manager. Assists emergency personnel including police, fire services and paramedic resources, as required.
  • Aids police services with investigations. This may include meeting with police officers, reviewing CCTV cameras and providing court testimony. As part of these investigations, the Security Supervisor may be required to view sensitive and/or traumatic video.
  • Investigates security incidents, writes factually accurate incident reports, maintains accurate files and reports results to the Manager, Corporate Security.
  • Ensures all security guards complete detailed and accurate incident reports before the end of their shift and within a reasonable time frame.
  • Conducts regular security inspections to identify areas for improvement and reports to the Manager, Corporate Security.
  • Identifies problems and/or emergency security issues to the Manager, Corporate Security and/or the Security Operations Centre.
  • Represents the Manager, Corporate Security at tenant and stakeholder meetings.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with the Security Operations Centre regarding any security issues onsite.
  • Assists Corporate Security staff with strike contingency planning.
  • Ensures that security personnel onsite are following all safety regulations and procedures.
  • Collaborates with the Manger, Corporate Security, the Security Advisor, and Leasing and Tenant Services to develop and implement emergency response plans for the complex.
  • Communicates with Facilities Supervisors and Project Managers, as required, to manage contractor access to secure areas of the complex and address maintenance issues within the complex.
  • Maybe required to perform other related duties as required.
  • Will be required to sign a Confidentiality Agreement
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • Must possess at least three (3) years of full time, professional security experience.
  • Must possess at least two (2) years previous supervisory experience, preferably in a security environment.
  • Successful completion of Grade 12, or equivalent, and a post-high school training program preferably in Law enforcement, Police Foundations, Security and Investigations, Criminology, or related subjects.
  • Must be proficient in the use of security systems including access control, CCTV and intrusion alarm systems. Specific experience working with Lenel, Bosch and Avigilon systems will be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge in the area of employee and asset security issues.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Nova Scotia Security Guard License from the Department of Justice.
  • Must possess a valid driver\'s license.
  • Successful completion of security systems training will be required

Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants will require a Criminal Records check satisfactory to the Halifax Regional Municipality and a security guard license from the Nova Scotia Department of Justice.

Please note - Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer\'s discretion.
