Applicants are encouraged to self-identify on their electronic application.Gardeners perform generalized gardening and labor duties as they pertain to: all aspects of horticulture, landscape maintenance, flower/shrub bed maintenance including greenhouse assignments as required. Working outdoors in all weather conditions must be considered by interested candidates. By working safely and cooperatively with others you will contribute to meeting the operational objectives of the business unit and Halifax Regional Municipality.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares, plants, and maintains flower, shrub, and group plantings.
  • General Greenhouse duties may be required to assist in propagating and maintaining a wide range of plant material.
  • Required to provide general care, maintenance and safe operation of assigned equipment and tools including the operation and general care of gardening vehicles as required.
  • Performs all the general duties of a labourer as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
  • Grade 12 education or equivalent.
  • Experience (in an employment setting) in general horticulture, gardening, and labour duties including the use of small equipment such as gas-powered whips, lawn mowers, tillers, rakes, shovels, paint brushes etc.
  • Experience in grounds maintenance or landscaping facility maintenance or landscape construction and operations.
  • Current and valid Nova Scotia driver's license (minimum Class 5).
  • A degree or diploma in Landscape Horticulture is considered an asset.
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and WHMIS or willingness to obtain.
  • Must be willing to accept occupational related training.
  • Must be familiar with Occupational Health & Safety practices.
  • Must have a good attendance and work record.
  • Ability to work with others and be part of a team environment.

Regular schedules are Monday - Friday or Wednesday - Sunday from 7:00 am - 3:00 pm. However, some variation to these shifts may be required.
