Mt. Newton Floral is a family-based business that has been in operation since 1986. Located on the beautiful Saanich Peninsula of southern Vancouver Island, Mt. Newton is a floral farm, bouquet supplier and cut flower wholesaler. We are currently looking for Farm Worker (Aug 2022 into the Fall).Job Purpose:Working under the direction of the lead farm hand, this role will be responsible for a wide range of tasks with a focus on planting, bed maintenance, harvesting, and processing of flowers. This is a full-time role, based on 37.5 hours/week with a paid lunch break, Monday to Friday. (Hours may vary based on type of work required for the day and weather conditions.)Duties/ Responsibilities:

• Sowing seeds, monitoring water needs of seedlings

• Prepare land and soil for crop production, hauling and spreading topsoil, fertilizer, and other amendments using wheelbarrows, buckets, and shovels

• Planting crops in greenhouses and fields

• Ongoing maintenance of raised beds and fields (weeding, etc.)

• Harvest flower crops, bunching in preparation for distribution, and recording crop yields

• Maintain clean work areas and grounds, as well as maintaining clean tools

• Operate maintain farm equipment

• Unload, load, store and maintain bulk seasonal greenery

Qualifications:

• Work independently or in a team

• Prior experience working within a nursery/greenhouse, or any type of horticultural environment landscaping is an asset, but not required

• Keen attention to detail, with an ability to adapt to changing working conditions and job tasks and find creative solutions

• Must be able to stand for long periods and to lift items up to 40lbs.

• Environmentally friendly

• Punctuality and good time management

• Comfortable working in a warehouse/ dock setting

• Sense of urgency (i.e. Completing task with a sense of urgency)

• Willingness to uphold and adhere to OHSA standards and provincial COVID 19 safety protocols

• Readiness to work in any and all-weather conditions
