The Animal Health Laboratory (AHL) provides fully accredited veterinary diagnostic services that support provincial animal disease diagnosis and surveillance. Our advanced technology and expertise deliver the highest standard of testing which is why we are a laboratory partner of choice for government and universities in Canada for agriculture, food safety, and animal health testing. Working in a fast-paced laboratory environment the Scientist will support the diagnostic efforts of the Animal Health Lab, Virology at the University of Guelph by:

  • Executing various types of molecular and immunologic analyses using established laboratory methods
  • Verifying, validating and implementing new and improved immunologic, molecular and next-generation sequencing assays and related instrumentation through significant bench work and troubleshooting
  • Generating accurate and timely analytical results
  • Supporting documentation of quality control materials according to established laboratory protocols and ISO 17025, AAVLD, SCC and CALA requirements
  • Acting as a resource during the transition of new test implementation in the laboratory
  • Performing literature searches to support on-going continuous improvement activities
Requirements of the position:

MSc combined with several years of molecular and immunological laboratory experience in an accredited environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; experience in laboratory QA/QC protocols including working knowledge of ISO 17025, AAVLD, SCC, and CALA laboratory accreditation programs; strong communication and organizational skills; ability to maintain a productive, and efficient work environment; proven experience in method development; excellent background in analytical skills to review, evaluate and interpret scientific and technical data; proficiency in conducting tests and assessing results; up to date knowledge of laboratory techniques as well as willingness to learn new tests, instrumentation and procedures; ability to multitask and adapt to a changing environment in order to ensure excellent client service; experience in operating automated laboratory equipment employing computer interfaces; understanding of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS regulations.
