Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) seeks a Scientific Data Specialist (Machine Learning and AI support)


ONC seeks an individual for the development of machine learning and AI capabilities in the service of data analytics and quality. The successful candidate will have an M.Sc. or (ideally) a Ph.D. in a relevant science or engineering discipline. The Scientific Data Specialist will be a key contributor to our Data Analytics and Quality team, driving innovation through the application of advanced computational techniques to vast and complex oceanographic datasets. This role is essential for transforming raw data into actionable insights and valuable data products that support both scientific research and operational needs. We are looking for a creative problem-solver with a passion for ocean science and a strong background in machine learning.


This position is eligible for a Hybrid Work Arrangement


The salary range for this position is:




Recruitment range: $79,376 - $87,518 starting salary

determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.

Performance range: $103,243

salary range ceiling is available through annual performance increases. Job Summary
The Scientific Data Specialist is responsible for the development of sophisticated data products, including verification and quality assessment of real-time and archived data. These data products enable scientific and non-scientific users to understand, interpret and analyze the information collected via the instruments on the network operated by ONC.


The successful candidate will be responsible for a range of critical tasks, including:


Model Development and Implementation: Design, develop, and operate machine learning models for the automated detection of anomalies and features in diverse data streams, such as hydrophone, sonar (ADCP, AZFP), and video data. Pipeline Integration: Develop and support robust machine learning pipelines for integration within ONC's proprietary data portal, Oceans 3.0, ensuring seamless integration and operational efficiency. Data Analysis and Feature Identification: Systematically identify and document device performance issues, natural and anthropogenic noise sources, marine mammal vocalizations, biomass tracking, and fauna observed in ROV videos. High-Value Data Product Generation: Develop and produce advanced data products, including acoustic array directional and noise tracking, current and wave data estimates, and biomass inferences from various data sources. Research Data Management (RDM): Support and promote research data management best practices, with a focus on provisioning machine-readable data and applications that align with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable). User Support and Tool Development: Provide user support through data provisioning and analytical assistance. Develop maintainable and reusable tools to streamline data analytics workflows. Job Requirements
The Scientific Data Specialist will have a Master's degree in Earth and Ocean Sciences or related field and 2-3 years of experience working with data from oceanographic instruments with a strong quantitative and technical background in relevant fields. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of machine learning algorithms and their practical application in scientific contexts. Strong programming skills in languages such as Python are required, with experience in relevant libraries (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch). Experience working with large, complex, and heterogeneous datasets is highly desirable, as is a background in oceanography, acoustics, or a related field. Excellent communication and collaboration skills are essential for working effectively with a diverse team of scientists, engineers, and data specialists.


Experience requirements:


Developing data products using computational and data analysis/visualization packages such as Matlab, R, IDL and Mathematica or their public domain equivalents Time series and spatial analysis Relational databases, modelling and simulation, and using query tools such as SQL

Knowledge requirements:


Scientific data formats/standards such as netCDF, HDF, SensorML or other XML-based formats used in Earth and Ocean Sciences An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Excellent skills in quantitative data validation Proven ability to take projects from conception to completion Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment Excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills Superior communication skills, both written and verbal Ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with all stakeholders Demonstrated administrative and organizational skills

Assets:


Practical experience in R, C/C++ or Java, XML or HTML and scripting languages
