University Health Network (UHN) is a network of research hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto and a member of the Toronto Academic Health Science Network. The scope of research and complexity of cases at UHN have made it a national and international source for discovery, education and patient care. Research across UHN's seven research institutes spans the full spectrum of diseases and disciplines, including cancer, cardiovascular sciences, transplantation, neural and sensory sciences, musculoskeletal health, rehabilitation sciences, and community and population health.

The Center for Advancing Neurotechnological Innovation to Application (CRANIA) was established by a $16.5M CFI grant to the University Health Network (UHN) and the University of Toronto to transform how neurological disorders are treated by: (1) developing new imaging and surgical technologies to identify regions of the brain involved in disease with unparalleled accuracy and precision; (2) creating 'smart' implantable devices and advanced microelectrodes to target specific brain regions; and (3) leveraging world-leading CRANIA researchers to customize these technologies to create new innovative therapies.

The Scientific Associate II will primarily be involved in neuromodulation laboratory studies a high potential for translation to the clinic within five years. This will require advanced knowledge of laboratory-based research methods. Prior experience with MRIs is essential. Serve as an advisor to researchers and trainees whose research projects utilize the .5T MRI. The Scientific Associate will coordinate neuromodulation team meetings.

The Scientific Associate will have excellent competency in written and verbal communications as well as assist with projects, manuscripts and grant applications. The ability to work with people from different disciplines and varying levels of scientific and technical expertise is required.

Key Duties:

  • Apply advanced scientific research knowledge and advise on new research direction and study design
  • Oversee the implementation of new laboratory techniques and technical developments
  • Support the CRANIA research team program which includes but is not limited to : train researchers and trainees on established and new procedures, assist in developing MRI protocols and assist in adherence to project schedules
  • Perform data analysis and interpretation utilizing MRI software
  • Assist with the preparation of manuscripts, grant applications and REB submissions
  • At all times, the individual is expected to support the overall mission of the program. There is a strong clinical collaboration including patient data collection and analysis.
Qualifications:
  • A PhD topic on MRI data analysis
  • At a minimum, two (2) years of related research experience
  • Familiarity of MRI data analysis software (e.g. FSL, AFNI, Freesurfer, SPM)
  • Mathematical affinity and creative problem solving skills
  • Proven track record of self-driven, innovative work including first authorship in peer-reviewed publications, patents, or equivalent
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to set priorities and work independently with accuracy in a fast-paced multitasking environment
  • Strong proficiency with MS Office software, Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of cognitive or clinical neuroscience preferred but not required
  • Experience in AI/deep learning-related projects preferred but not required
