TELUS Spark Science Centre (Spark), a registered educational charity, exists to entertain and inspire people of all ages through creative encounters with science, engineering, technology, math and art. Spark exists to lift people up with the power of curiosity through creative encounters with science!

Calgary's science centre is a pioneer in science entertainment and programming, with roots dating back to 1967. Home to one of Western Canada's largest dome theatre, the Digital Immersion Gallery, VR experiences, and innovative spaces like Steven's Lab, where interactive experiments unfold before your eyes. From the robot-dog Flint to Canada's first robot-coa5ter, R05iE, and a 15-acre park surrounding the science of the developing brain, Spark is a hub for creative encounters.

Position Overview



Spark is currently recruiting a part time contract Science Guide, Youth Science (Camps). The Science Guide, Youth Science (Camps) reports directly to Supervisor, Community Science Connections and Manager, Community Science Connections.The Science Guide, Youth Science (Camps) is particularly responsible for being one of the tremendous personalities that delight our campers through all of our learning programs offered during our Spring and Summer Camps. These Science Guides can also be called upon to assist with the creation, piloting and implementation of new programs as it makes sense within the context of their day.

The Science Guides, are the face of Spark's customer service and science communication front lines. They are responsible for providing top-notch STEAM programming, maintaining a clean and safe learning environment, and coordinating daily activities with the broader camps team and other stakeholders (both internally and externally).

This contract runs from

March 3rd - September 1st, 2025_

with the opportunity for extension.

Spring Break Camps:

Candidates must be available for

at least one Spring Break Camp_

in order to be considered for a position.

March 24th - 28th (CBE Spring Break)



April 21st - 25th (CCSD Spring Break)



Summer Camps:

Training runs from June 16th - 27th (M-F, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm). Candidates must be available for 85% of our training days in order to be considered for a position.

Camp Programs run from June 30th till August 29th and full time hours are required during these weeks. The week runs from Monday to Friday and shifts run from 7:45 am to 4:15 pm or 8:45 am to 5:15 pm. Candidates are able to book a maximum of one week off during that time period to take time for vacation.

Key Responsibilities



Working in teams, supervise and maintain a safe and respectful camp atmosphere for a group of 20 Campers between the ages of 5 and 12 as they explore TELUS Spark Science Centre spaces

Work together with other staff and volunteers to set-up, deliver and manage materials for hands-on, themed STEM activities

Provide excellent customer service for camp guardians while safely signing Campers in and out and providing updates on their Camper's progress and behavior

Lead games and/or songs to help Campers get to know one another and have a fun-filled week at camp

Develop positive classroom relationships and maintain high-quality programming with inclusive classroom management

Be vigilant in applying and overseeing the execution of all health and safety protocols.

Assist with the development, iteration, and piloting of ground-breaking education experiences.

Support the planning and logistics of all camp programs. This includes ensuring that the rooms are set-up and prepared to provide a seamless experience for our campers, that necessary supplies are available, and that the rooms are a clean state when not occupied so they can otherwise be utilized.

Take an ongoing learning approach to maintain the quality of programming through learning new teaching techniques and practices, soft skill development, and engaging in training programs offered internally.

Ensure all elements of the camper journey is held to the highest standard.

Ensure personal and team activities are aligned with business and strategic goals of Spark as a whole.

Model high performance, flexibility and kindness in a rapidly changing growth environment.

Other duties as required and assigned.

Qualifications & Knowledge



At least one year of experience leading and working with groups of children in a camp or classroom setting

An interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM), facilitation, design, and inquiry

Team oriented. Able to work independently and as part of a group.

Adaptable with excellent problem-solving skills. Able to think on their feet and approach challenging situations with positivity and confidence.

Creative and generous with their energy. Interested in organizing even their day-to-day work tasks so that they can be approached with a sense of play and fun.

Highly empathetic and a demonstrated passion for inclusion and accommodation of different learning styles

Skills in public speaking and customer service, as well as experience in delivering and developing educational programs is an asset

At least one year of post-secondary education would be considered an asset

Interest or experience in the following subjects would be considered an asset due to alignment with camp programming:

o Introductory coding and robotics

o Simple woodworking and construction

o Maker/Tinkering Skills and experience using power tools

o Gardening and plants

o Climate Science

o Zoology and animals, including veterinary science

o Anthropology, Geology, or Paleontology

o Astronomy, Rockets, and space

o Cooking and Culinary Skills

o Sports and Sports Medicine

o Hiking/Camping or Outdoor Survival Skills

o Visual or Performing Arts

o Camping/Hiking and outdoor survival skills

o Human Biology and Medicine

o Aerodynamics, Physics, and propulsion

A proven track record of adding value to an organization's culture and initiatives.

First Aid certification would be considered an asset

Successful candidates must submit a criminal record check including a vulnerable sectors check 18 years old or older.

The successful candidate may be required to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Valid first aid would be considered an asset.

Hourly rate range:

$18.00 to $18.91 per hour depending on experience.
