Click here to log in Details: The School Counsellor is responsible for the coordination of the comprehensive counselling program within the school, focusing on preventative and responsive programs and services. These programs and services must be principally concerned with the personal, social, educational and career needs of all students, placing priority on the best interest of students. Candidates who meet the following qualifications are encouraged to monitor postings and apply:
  • Master of Education Degree in Counselling, Counselling Psychology or equivalent (minimum 48 credit hours with courses related to counselling skills and practice;
  • Masters courses must include counselling theory and practice*, group counselling theory and practice*, practice issues and ethics, counselling theory and practicum*, counselling strategies and interventions*, principles of assessment for counselling, research design in education, career and transition counselling, theory of human development, diversity or culturally responsive pedagogy. *Courses related to counselling skills and practice must be completed on site (face-to-face) under the supervision of the counsellor educator; elective courses may be taken online; preference for courses contextualized for the education setting;
  • Minimum 500-hour supervised practicum component (inclusive of 250 direct hours and 50 group hours), preferably in a school-based practicum setting;
  • Counselling practicum in school counselling or minimum of 1 year of counselling experience in education (public, private, post-secondary)
  • A valid Nova Scotia Teacher\'s Certificate;
OR Eligible for a Nova Scotia Teacher\'s Certificate or Permit to Teach through the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. HRCE is also accepting applications from individuals who do not have a Bachelor of Education degree/teaching experience but meet the other qualifications above. Those selected to move forward in the hiring process will be contacted regarding next steps. Upon a satisfactory interview and positive references, candidates will be asked to complete a Permit to Teach Application and provide required documentation such as official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions. Permits will be in effect for the 2022-23 school year. Candidates who do not hold a Bachelor of Education degree will be paid the daily substitute rate of $196.23 and, after completing 18 consecutive days in the same position, will be paid as a TC4 in the first year of service (daily rate of $261.21). HRCE offers comprehensive health and dental benefits and defined benefit pension plan. Transcripts supporting your Masters in Counselling must be included with your application.
