Who We Are

The SFU School for the Contemporary Arts (SCA) is situated within the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts in the Downtown Eastside, one of Vancouver\xe2\x80\x99s most diverse neighbourhoods. The SCA offers a unique curriculum in which we are committed to integrating studio classes with critical contemporary issues as well as to interdisciplinary collaboration both within the classroom and beyond. The SCA offers BFAs in Dance, Film, Music & Sound, Theatre & Performance, Production and Design, Visual Art; a BA in Art, Performance and Cinema Studies; an interdisciplinary MFA; and a MA and PhD in Contemporary Arts.

About the Role

The SCA Shop Technician manages and maintains the School for the Contemporary Arts (SCA) wood shop, facilitating access for faculty and students, and providing expertise and mentoring to projects and productions of the SCA.

The Shop Technician leads in the coordination, planning, maintenance, and operation of the shop areas of the SCA. As the primary position responsible for these shops, the Shop Technician develops and implements safe work practices for shop and equipment usage and oversees the safe use of various production areas. This position supports student learning through supervising and mentoring students working in shop facilities and on school productions, and developing and conducting training sessions for classes in consultation with faculty.

This position creates and maintains the conditions for student learning, faculty research, safety, and sustainable resource management within the SCA shop facilities. They maintain and adapt the shop space and equipment in response to emerging safety, access, and training needs.

We are seeking someone skilled in running a shop, who is passionate about supporting student learning, who enjoys working collaboratively and imaginatively across disciplines and skill levels.

Qualifications

High school graduation and two years of post-secondary education or formal certificate/diploma program equivalent in Theatre Production, Fine Arts, or another field related to art-making. Minimum 6 years of experience. An equivalent combination of formal education, certificate/program of study and experience is acceptable.

  • Excellent knowledge of shop-based technologies, systems, and practices; with excellent knowledge of one or more performance/art/film-related fields such as scenic construction or gallery exhibition preparation.
  • Excellent knowledge of shop management and safe work practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Ability to coordinate, train, and provide work direction to students and temporary staff/technical crew, in a fast-paced environment within strict timelines.
