We are currently seeking a Safety Officer to join our Calgary Business Services Team.

We are currently providing our services for New Residential Builds, Renovations, and Multi-Family projects.

Location:

This position is based in Calgary, Alberta. This is primarily a Field-Based position with regular visits to active construction projects. Other locations include remote, in office, potential travel to all GWI Divisions and off-site for team, vendor, training and client meetings will be required.

Hours:

Full-Time Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week.

Position Overview:

The Safety Officer is responsible for developing and enforcing safety programs, conducting regular jobsite inspections, and ensuring compliance with OHS and local regulations. They provide safety training, lead toolbox talks, and oversee proper use and maintenance of PPE and equipment. The officer investigates accidents and near-misses, maintains required documentation, and works closely with supervisors, employees, and sub-contractors to identify hazards and implement corrective actions. Their overall role is to minimize risks, promote a strong safety culture, and ensure a safe working environment for all GWI associated workers including employees, subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers. The Safety Officer is expected to contribute to the company's growth, profitability, and effectiveness in all aspects of our business.

Responsibilities:



Safety Development, Compliance & Oversight:

Ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and local safety regulations relevant to construction and drywall operations for all GWI divisions. Safety?Program Development and Implementation Digital Platform Utilization: Leverage advanced digital?safety?management platforms, including Site Docs, to streamline?safety?processes and data management. Facilitate GWI Safety Committee across all GWI divisions Manage Safety Equipment: Oversee distribution, inspection, and maintenance of PPE, fall-protection gear, and other safety equipment.
Job Site Inspections & Safety Representation:

Conduct routine and unannounced safety inspections on active job sites. Monitor job sites to verify proper PPE use, fall protection, scaffolding safety, material handling, and dust-control practices. Identify hazards such as improper ladder use, unsecured drywall stacks, silica dust exposure, and unsafe work practices. Be the main internal and external safety point of contact and expertise for GWI team, subcontractors, vendors, suppliers and clients. Working to provide proactive solutions and high-level knowledge. Attending client safety meetings and completing any required safety documentation. Document findings and issue corrective action plans; follow up to verify completion.
Training, Awareness & Development

Develop and deliver comprehensive training programs to ensure all employees and subcontractors are aware of?safety?practices and regulations. Including tool handling, drywall lifting techniques, fall prevention, respirator use, ergonomics, and emergency procedures. Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with various departments to promote?safety?initiatives and encourage open communication regarding?safety?concerns. Lead toolbox meetings, safety check-ins, and quarterly safety training sessions. Ensure new hires receive the required onboarding and competency evaluations.
Incident Response & Reporting Management

Lead investigations into accidents, near-misses, and property damage incidents to identify root causes and prevent future occurrences. Prepare formal incident reports and recommend preventive measures. Maintain accurate safety records, logs, and compliance documentation.
Risk Management & Continuous Improvement

Emergency Preparedness: Ensure emergency action plans are in place, and workers are trained to respond to incidents such as fires, falls, or medical emergencies. Work with Construction Manager, Site Supervisors and team to identify job-specific risks and develop mitigation plans. Risk Assessment and Hazard Mitigation: Evaluate new projects, tasks, and jobsite conditions to anticipate hazards and implement preventive controls Continuous Improvement: Analyze?safety?data and metrics to identify trends and areas for improvement, fostering a proactive?safety?culture. Evaluate equipment (lifts, scaffolding, drywall carts, cutting tools) to ensure safe operation. Recommend process improvements that reduce risk and improve productivity.
Other Duties:

Handle confidential information with integrity and discretion. Maintain confidentiality of GWI quotes and pricing, contractor rates, pay and other sensitive information. Assist with budget management and financial tracking for the Safety division. Contribute to team meetings and collaborate with colleagues to achieve business safety objectives.

Requirements:



Thorough understanding of OHS regulations, fall protection standards, and silica exposure control. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. The ability to work effectively with field crews, subcontractors, employees, and management. Analytical skills, the ability to utilize data analysis tools to drive safety improvements Ability to travel between job sites and work in active construction environments. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Tech Skills - General understanding of Technology for both hardware and software considered an asset. Strong communication skills, adaptable to utilizing multiple communication platforms (phone, text, email, in-person, and scheduling software) to effectively solve problems. Ability to innovate and look outside to the box for creative solutions to address business processes Collaborative Teamwork skills. The ability to take direction and work effectively alongside a team to achieve solutions. Knowledge of basic financial concepts to understand how GWI ensures it is profitable
Required Qualifications:

Must possess NCSO certification Proven experience as a Safety Officer in construction; drywall or interior finishing industry preferred. Safety Certifications such as First Aid/CPR.
