Your Opportunity:

We are seeking a Safety and Compliance Advisor for the Calgary Zone to support the Senior Safety Advisor and all of the safety initiatives led by our sites. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to showcase their skillset while growing and enhancing the safety culture within our team. To summarize: The Safety and Compliance Advisor, reporting directly to the Zone Director, FME, Calgary Zone, is a key member of the departmental leadership team. The Safety and Compliance Advisor supports the Zone Director, the Senior Safety advisor, FME Site Directors and Managers, and front line staff, by implementing and overseeing departmental workplace health safety and emergency preparedness initiatives, coordinating training activities, and drafting and maintaining departmental procedures in accordance with legislation, corporate policy and other imperatives. The Safety and Compliance Advisor establishes and maintains positive relationships with Calgary Zone (CZ), Workplace Health and Safety (WHS), CZ Emergency Preparedness & Disaster Management (E/DM), Infection Prevention & Control (IPC), AHS training authorities, site administrative support personnel, quality councils, Protective Services and other external stakeholders. The incumbent will also be a trainer on some AHS requirements such as Fall Protection, Lift Training and N95 Fit Testing.

Description:

Key components of this position are: Establishes, overseas and enforces the departmental safety program, to include general WHS, safety inspections and corrective actions, personal protective equipment policy, weekly safety moments, safety reporting, and other relevant aspects. Assesses and ensures departmental compliance with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation. Implements and monitors corporate safety programs related to electrical safety, control of hazardous energy, fall protection, working alone, confined and restricted space, and others. Assists with IPC and risk assessments. Represents FME on relevant site, zone or provincial committees such as joint WHS committees and others. Liaises with AHS WHS and Alberta Occupational Health & Safety as appropriate. Produces, reviews and updates to departmental procedures related to safety to ensure compliance with legislation and higher order directives. Reads and interprets safety-related legislation, codes, policies and standards, and advises the Zone Director, FME Site Directors and Managers accordingly. Assist FME Site Directors, Managers and Lead Hands with the monitoring of contractor compliance with safety policy. Monitors, records and coordinates respirator N95 Fit testing for department personnel. Coordinates safety inspections / testing and maintains records for equipment such as patient lifts, man lifts, overhead cranes, rigging equipment, fall protection tie-offs and other related equipment. Supports the training related goals of the Zone. Develops policies and procedures with all stakeholders. Provides support to emergency preparedness discussions, keeps the response updated.

Required Qualifications: Occupational Health & Safety Certificate or Diploma with a minimum of three years of related experience with trades and/or with industries; or Journeyman Certification in a building trade and 5 years of direct involvement with an Occupational Health & Safety program in an industrial or other relevant environment; or National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) certification with a minimum of three years of related experience with trades and/or with industries.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Acute awareness of the importance of safety and emergency preparedness in the workplace. Intellectual capacity to find, read, know, synthesize, apply, observe and teach in practical ways the requirements of numerous applicable policies, codes, standards and guidelines. Cognitive ability to generate, review and update departmental policies and procedures into a coherent, practicable and easy reference resource that remains consistent with applicable higher order policies. Instructional, leadership, planning, and communication skills that enable the coordination and provision of training and emergency preparedness drills within the department. Keen attention to detail and advanced writing ability. Excellent interpersonal skills. Must be capable of working at other Calgary zone sites or working irregular hours when required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Formal health and safety and or emergency preparedness training or experience within the public sector (federal or provincial) would be considered an asset. Proven leadership skills in a safety, emergency preparedness and training environment. Policy writing experience. Formal leadership training Familiarity with Alberta Occupational Health & Safety legislation. Familiarity with Alberta construction, fire, safety and other related codes.
