We are looking for a Health, Safety and Environment Advisor to support our Health, Safety and Environment Branch (HSE). The Health, Safety and Environment Advisor would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

The National Research Council operates labs and research facilities across the country, each with its own unique challenges related to health, safety and environmental management. NRC is involved with innovative research in transportation, engineering, life and medical sciences, and emerging technologies in computer science, electronics, astronomy and nanotechnology. Each area presents a wide and exciting variety of health, safety and environment related aspects ranging from worker health and protection, to animal safety, biosafety, radiation safety, hazardous materials management, noise and air emissions, waste waters, species at risk, and the list goes on.

NRC's Health, Safety and Environment Branch proactively establishes, promotes and implements best practices in health, safety and environmental management. The HSE Branch provides enabling and support services to NRC's Research & Development activities, assuring the health and safety of our employees, our neighbouring communities and our environment.

As a Health, Safety and Environment Advisor, you will partner with your assigned clients in the research centres and corporate branches to expand upon a culture that works proactively to ensure the health and safety of employees, visitors, contractors, our neighbouring communities, and the environment. You will be expected to develop a strong knowledge of your client's business and their resulting challenges related to health, safety and environment stewardship so that you can effectively support implementation and monitor NRC's occupational health, safety and environmental management policies and programs. The HSE Advisor team members are supported by a strong operations group and risk area experts who will provide technical advice and guidance as required.

In our Ottawa location, we are looking for an HSE Advisor to embrace the responsibility of supporting the clients. To be successful in this client facing role, you will need to have strong interpersonal skills and the desire to learn about new clients, new policies and programs, possess excellent organizational awareness coupled with demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of safety programs in settings such as laboratories, machine shops, high-capacity industrial equipment and electrical/engineering environments together with the required analytical skills to accomplish the required tasks.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

Bachelor's degree in science (chemistry, biology, biochemistry, environment), engineering, or industrial hygiene.

Preference may be given to those with a professional certification in a field relevant to the position.

Equivalent level of training, knowledge and experience may be considered.

Experience
  • Significant* experience providing HSE client support to multi-faceted work operations.
  • Experience working in a scientific, engineering and/or industrial work environment, supporting the implementation of health & safety related regulations, policies and programs. This includes experience performing risk assessments, preparing safe work procedures, conducting audits or workplace inspections, providing emergency response support, and-participating in investigations following incidents and accidents.
  • Experience providing guidance and support in relation to occupational health and safety.
*Significant experience is defined as more than 2 years of experience.

For this position, the NRC will evaluate candidates using the following competency profile:

Relocation

Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with the NRC's directives.

Compensation

From $69,087 to $81,221 per annum.

In addition, the incumbent will receive the Bilingualism Bonus of $800 per year.
