Our client, the Stevens Group of Companies, is a privately held, third generation family business with its head office located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The group of companies includes a design-build construction company (B.D. Stevens Ltd.), ready-mix concrete supply, long term care homes, a commercial door and frame supplier, industrial cleaning and remediation services, various commercial real estate properties, and more. They also have a sister company Citadel Contractors and operate as a Tilt-up specialist out of Apex, North Carolina, serving the entire Southeast United States.

Meridia is happy to partner with the Stevens Group of Companies in search of a Safety Advisor to work with a number of their operations around the Halifax Regional Municipality.

Role Description

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Safety Advisor will oversee and administer the Health & Safety programs at a number of the Stevens Group companies. This includes providing safety training and other safety materials, identifying gaps in safety programs, developing or improving upon safety policies and procedures, and performing inspections and audits at facilities and job sites. This role will also work closely with the Safety Manager and division leaders and their teams to fully support their unique safety needs and ensure the smooth rollout of a new safety management software (SALUS) at all sites.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Ensuring all employees have current safety training relevant to their position
  • Maintaining database of employee safety training records
  • Ensuring company safety programs and manuals are complete with all necessary SWPs/SJPs and are kept up to date with current legislation
  • Ensuring safety manuals are accessible to staff and that staff are trained on any revisions, updates, or changes
  • Managing internal and external COR audits where applicable
  • Performing site visits to facilities to review and report on hazards in the workplace and to implement solutions to improve potential areas of concern
  • Ensure tools and equipment are being maintained and inspected to applicable safety standards
  • Performing regular spot inspections and providing support to managers and employees at facilities and job sites to ensure any corrective actions are addressed
  • Conducting Project Close-out Performance Reviews
  • Leading investigations of workplace incidents or near misses
  • Assisting with Workers' Compensation Board claims as required
  • Supporting supervisors and employees' use of SALUS to ensure proper utilization
Your Qualifications

As a safety professional, you are someone who will proactively seek out ways to improve safety programs. You are able to operate autonomously but have a collaborative approach when working with management or site personnel. If you witness unsafe activities or violations, you are able to act assertively to rectify situations. You have a proven ability to identify new hazards during job site or facility visits and can give direction to site personnel accordingly.

Your qualifications include:
  • 3+ years' experience in a Health and Safety role
  • Training/education in Health and Safety, with certifications or designations such as CRSP, CHSC, CSS, and/or HSP
  • Experience in a construction environment is considered an asset
  • Stellar written and oral communication skills
  • A self-starter with a drive to solve problems
  • Great organizational skills, including time-management
  • Clean driving record and ability to travel
