PURPOSE
The Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction and supporting student learning and development throughout the RMT program. This includes classroom teaching, student assessment, practicum coordination, and supervision. The instructor plays a critical role in preparing students for successful entry into the massage therapy profession by maintaining academic standards, supporting student success, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements. The RMT curriculum aligns with the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia (CMTBC) standards and provincial accreditation guidelines. All instructors must comply with college policies and relevant professional regulations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Theory Instruction (In-Person or Online - if applicable)
Deliver engaging, effective instruction based on the CMTBC-aligned RMT curriculum.
Prepare lesson plans, presentations, and instructional materials that meet learning objectives and engage diverse learners.
Administer and grade assignments, quizzes, tests, and practical assessments to evaluate student progress.
Maintain accurate and timely records of student attendance, grades, and evaluations in accordance with
College policies. Advise and support students on course content, program requirements, practicum readiness, and career pathways.
Foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment consistent with healthcare education best practices.
Participate in curriculum development, instructional planning, and ongoing program improvements.
Practical/Lab Instruction (if applicable)
Facilitate hands-on practice sessions aligned with theoretical content and program competencies.
Demonstrate massage therapy techniques and protocols, coaching students on proper procedures and client care.
Evaluate student performance in practical settings, ensuring safety and professional standards are maintained.
Maintain lab/classroom equipment and ensure proper setup for sessions.
Provide individualized support to students during skill development activities.
Practicum Supervision (if applicable)
Coordinate and supervise students during off-site practicum placements according to program guidelines.
Serve as the primary contact between the college and practicum sites, ensuring practicum standards and professionalism.
Observe and assess students' application of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in real-world settings.
Provide constructive feedback to students and complete required practicum evaluations and documentation.
General Responsibilities (All Instructors)
Monitor and discuss student progress and address academic concerns as needed.
Submit all required documentation, including attendance and grades, in a timely manner following institutional policies.
Accurately track and report student attendance and grades using college systems.
Attend faculty meetings and participate in program and college initiatives.
Participate in faculty performance reviews if required.
Arrange make-up sessions for missed classes due to illness or other valid reasons.
Comply with all college policies and procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator, Dean, or President.
REQUIREMENTS
To be successful in the role, candidates need to demonstrate the following competencies/skills:
Comprehensive understanding of CMTCA accreditation standards and the scope of practice for Registered Massage Therapists in British Columbia.
Experience and knowledge of adult education principles and inclusive teaching practices.
Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to assess and support student progress fairly and effectively.
Proficiency with online learning tools and platforms (e.g., Moodle, MS Teams) is an asset.
Flexibility to teach in various delivery formats and schedules, including evenings or weekends if required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) in good standing with the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia (CMTBC).
Minimum of 2 years of recent clinical experience as an RMT, preferably with some teaching or instructional experience.
Schedule: 5-7 hours per week
