Overview

This position is open to law students only. Up to ten review officer intern positions are available from May 6 - August 23, 2024 in the Review Division of WorkSafeBC.

A review officer is a decision-maker at the first level of statutory review in the workers\xe2\x80\x99 compensation system. As a review officer intern, you\xe2\x80\x99ll assume responsibility for reviewing and analyzing evidence, and making well-reasoned written decisions on matters under the Workers Compensation Act. Decisions must be fair, of high quality and rendered within statutory timeframes.

As a member of a team of student interns, you will report to a manager and receive extensive training and mentoring assistance during your term of employment. You\xe2\x80\x99ll work in a collegial environment where feedback and consultation are encouraged.

We\xe2\x80\x99re hiring up to ten students to join our team in our head office in Richmond. In this role you will work in person from our Richmond, BC head office.

What you\'ll do

As a review officer intern, you will:

  • Manage a caseload of assigned reviews for decisions primarily involving a worker\xe2\x80\x99s entitlement to, or the extent of, compensation benefits
  • Review relevant evidence contained in file materials and submissions
  • Where appropriate, conduct further investigation including contacting individuals by phone to address specific questions, or obtaining further medical information or an opinion from a medical adviser (physician)
  • Research law and policy to determine the appropriate considerations and analysis for the decision
  • Where necessary, consult with a mentor, team manager, or quality assurance representative for guidance
  • Write formal but understandable decision letters which clearly set out the issue(s), the relevant evidence, the submissions of the parties, and adequate reasons for the decision

  • Independently make difficult decisions
Salary:
  • $27.24 per hour for first time intern students
  • $30.14 per hour for returning intern students
