Duties

You will deliver technical and analytical services in applied science, monitoring, and active management related to a resource management program. Active programs and projects include ecosystem integrity monitoring, invasive species management, hyperabundant species management, impact assessments, species at risk protection and recovery, habitat restoration, and prescribed fire. You will also be expected to assist the Resource Conservation Department with Visitor Safety and Human-Wildlife Coexistence activities, as needed, which includes but is not limited to providing first aid to the public, wildlife handling and relocation, etc. (i.e., Duty Officer Program). You will have the opportunity to be involved with other work happening in Point Pelee National Park.

This position will be based in Point Pelee National Park, within the Southwestern Ontario Field Unit. Parks Canada?s Southwestern Ontario Field Unit is a geographical area that encompasses approximately 30,000 km2 of Canada?s unique natural and cultural heritage. From the picturesque Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, to the most Southern point of Canada at Point Pelee National Park, the Southwestern Ontario Field Unit offers a truly distinctive work environment. In 1918, Point Pelee National Park was the first national park established for conservation purposes.

The area is within the traditional territory of the Caldwell First Nation and Walpole Island First Nation and has a rich cultural history dating back at least 6,000 years. The park and the First Nations work in collaboration on a range of initiatives, including marsh restoration, hyperabundant species management, traditional ceremonies in the park, employment for First Nations youth, and sharing knowledge for cultural conservation.

Point Pelee National Park is an ecologically significant area, composed of a 15 km2 sand spit and marsh complex that extends into Lake Erie, the park provides habitat for more than 390 species of birds and 750 vascular plants, and also supports over 60 species at risk protected under the Species at Risk Act (SARA) (S.C. 2002, c.29). The marsh at Point Pelee National Park is one of the best and largest remaining examples of a southern Great Lakes marsh and is recognized as a Wetland of International Significance by the Ramsar Convention of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to fill two temporary, full-time positions of various lengths ranging from 4 months to 10 months, starting June 1, 2023, with the possibility of an extension and/or becoming indeterminate (permanent).

This process may be used to create a list of qualified candidates to staff similar positions with various tenures, security levels or linguistic profiles in same or other parts of the country.

EDUCATION:
Minimum completion of two years of a post-secondary program related to environmental and/or natural sciences (e.g. biology, ecology, geology), or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience in a field related to the position. Degree equivalency
EXPERIENCE:

• Experience travelling or working in the field.
• Experience participating in two (2) or more of the following phases of field research projects; (design, logistics, synthesis of background information, determining data/sample collection requirements, data/sample analysis, analysis of results, presentation of results).
• Experience using a variety of data/sample collection equipment types or methods of transportation in the field.
• Experience contributing to the preparation of a minimum of three (3) technical/scientific reports and/or manuscripts drafts, presentations, web site information, public presentation or displays.

Operational Requirements:

• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment.
• Willingness to work and/or travel in remote, wilderness locations and inclement weather conditions by various means of transportation.
• Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, including callouts when required.
• Willingness to obtain certification in the operation of various forms of ground (e.g., all-terrain vehicles) and marine (motorized and non-motorized vessels) as required.
• Willingness to travel (training, workshops), including overnight, off site and/or weekends.

Conditions of employment

• Obtain and maintain Reliability Status security clearance.
• Valid driver?s licence.
• Will be required to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks.
• Successful completion of Standard First Aid-CPR or higher level (organized by Parks Canada).
• Successful completion of ICS100/200 or higher level of incident management training (organized by Parks Canada).
• Successful completion of the Canadian Firearms Safety course (organized by Parks Canada).
