The Resident Support Worker plays a key role in providing emotional support, crisis intervention, safety planning, and housing advocacy to women and children living in our shelter. This role also supports day-to-day shelter operations and works closely with team members to ensure high-quality, compassionate service delivery.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide emotional and practical support to residents, including crisis counseling and safety planning
Conduct client intake, needs and risk assessments, and develop individual support plans
Offer referrals, advocacy, and accompany clients to appointments as needed
Support residents in securing safe, long-term housing
Maintain up-to-date, confidential client records
Promote client empowerment and engagement in programming
Respond to 24-hour support phone lines and provide crisis support
Contribute to daily shelter operations including shopping, donations, and general upkeep
Work collaboratively with staff to ensure effective communication and service coordination
WHAT YOU BRING
Post-secondary education in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience working with women and children impacted by violence, trauma, or systemic barriers
Understanding of trauma-informed, culturally competent, and anti-oppressive practices
Strong knowledge of community resources and support systems
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage crisis situations with care and professionalism
Valid driver's license
Current satisfactory criminal record check (including Vulnerable Sector), Child Abuse Registry, and Prior Contact Check (or willingness to obtain)
ASSETS
Knowledge of family systems and intersectional approaches
Experience supporting individuals with mental health or substance use concerns
Fluency in additional languages or lived experience relevant to the work
