Duties

In support of the Soil Health and Fertility Development Program at AAFC-Beaverlodge Research Farm, the incumbent will be working in field and in laboratory setting to contribute to understanding of the relation between plant, soils, livestock, agronomy and ecology. Duties includes research activities under field/greenhouse/lab condition; design, fabrication or maintaining research equipment; contribution to the understanding of the relationship between soil health, soil fertility, plant nutrition, water and air quality; and contributes to or maintains soils and living plant material. The incumbent will work with inter-disciplinary team towards maintaining a safe environment with which to accomplish assignments. The completion of this work will require the incumbent to be able to sustain physically demanding work in varying work environments.

Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in agriculture, environmental science, biology, or in another related field.

If you were educated outside of Canada, you must have your certificates and/or diplomas assessed against Canadian education standards. Degree equivalency Experience in conducting soil health research activities under field conditions.
Experience in the collection and processing of soil, plant or air samples.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Graduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Biology, Agriculture, Soil science, Plant science, Environmental Sciences, Life Sciences or a related discipline. Degree equivalency Experience in using computer programs on spatial analysis such as Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Experience in analyzing data using specialized statistical software such as SAS, R.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance
  • Possession of a valid class 5 Alberta driver\xe2\x80\x99s license or other provincial/territorial equivalency.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
  • Ability and willingness to work irregular hours and overtime including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability and willingness to work with high levels of noise and dust.
  • Ability and willingness to work in various environmental conditions including outdoors under various weather conditions and with exposure to insects.
  • Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work activities, including moderate to heavy manual work requiring bending and lifting heavy objects (up to 22 kg).
  • Known allergies must be controlled through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication and must not impinge upon the duties to be performed.
  • With appropriate safety precautions in place, ability and willingness to work in laboratory and/or field environments for extended periods at a time.
  • Ability and willingness to work with chemicals, pesticides and other hazardous materials.
  • Ability and willingness to sit for long periods at a lab bench making observations or handling samples.
