Snapshot

At DeepMind, we've built a unique culture and work environment where long-term ambitious research can flourish. Our special interdisciplinary team combines the best techniques from deep learning, reinforcement learning and systems neuroscience to build general-purpose learning algorithms. We have already made a number of high profile breakthroughs towards building artificial general intelligence, and we have all the ingredients in place to make further significant progress over the coming years!

About Us

We're a dedicated scientific community, committed to "solving intelligence" and ensuring our technology is used for widespread public benefit. We have a supportive and inclusive environment where collaboration is encouraged and learning is shared freely.

The Alberta team, led by Richard Sutton, Michael Bowling, and Patrick Pilarski, is focused on understanding and creating general intelligence that learns on its own from its interactions with the world around it. We primarily study settings where agents are constantly learning in a world vastly larger and more complex than the agent(s) themselves. Our research aims to understand intelligence by exploring continual reinforcement learning methods for constructing state, predictions, policies, temporal abstractions, and models through trial-and-error interactions. We do so by creating agents with no prior knowledge of their environment nor the other agents in it. Our work explores simple decision-making environments like grid worlds and larger scale simulations including complex imperfect information game domains, robotic platforms, and human-agent interactions in virtual reality. See for further details, where we outline some of our team priorities.

DeepMind's Alberta office is located in Edmonton, the fifth largest city in Canada. The office fosters an open, playful research environment, for our researchers and our agents. Our collaborative atmosphere enables researchers to work on research problems that are driven by their curiosity and excitement, to constantly acquire new skills, and to focus on tackling long-term, meaningful research questions in creative ways.

The role

Research Scientists at DeepMind lead our efforts in developing novel algorithmic architecture towards the end goal of solving and building Artificial General Intelligence.

Having pioneered research in the world's leading academic and industrial labs as PhDs, post-docs or professorships, Research Scientists join DeepMind to work collaboratively within and across Research fields. They develop solutions to fundamental questions in machine learning, computational neuroscience and AI.

Drawing on expertise from a variety of disciplines including reinforcement learning, deep learning, robotics and multi-agent reinforcement learning, our Research Scientists are at the forefront of groundbreaking research.

Key responsibilities:

  • Design, implement and evaluate models, agents and software prototypes of perceptual processing.
  • Report and present research findings and developments including status and results clearly and efficiently both internally and externally, verbally and in writing.
  • Participate in and organize ambitious collaborative research projects.
  • Work with external collaborators and maintain relationships with relevant research labs and key individuals as appropriate.
  • Work in collaboration with our Ethics and Governance teams to ensure our advances in intelligence are developed ethically and provide broad benefits to humanity.
