Fisheries Research Scientist (1-year term)

Position Overview:

The Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF) is seeking a Fisheries Research Scientist to support our fisheries evaluation work examining (industry) costs and (conservation) benefits of fisheries management and fishing gear used throughout Atlantic Canada and BC, with respect to the risk posed to entangle marine mammals. This position will work closely with the CWF Fisheries Management Specialist and the Senior Conservation Biologist and will involve predictive risk modeling and hypothesis testing, data collection and management, and the production of detailed reports and scientific publications.

The ideal candidate will be self-driven and detail-oriented, with a minimum two years of experience in modeling or statistical analysis. They must be comfortable with the use of R and ArcGIS must be capable of working as a member of a team and dealing with multiple projects and competing priorities.

Job Duties

  • Compile data on fishing gear modification, fisheries log books, and on-demand gear trials
  • Analyze gear modification trial data
  • Collaborate in producing risk analyses (hindcast and forecast)
  • Compiles and analyzes fisheries survey data
  • Assist in risk analyses of BC fisheries
  • Assist in analysis of endline elevation studies
  • Other duties shall be assigned as required.
Requirements
  • Post-Secondary degree in biology, ecology, statistics
  • 2 years' experience in modeling or statistical investigations.
  • Strong knowledge of scientific procedures
  • Keen attention to details.
  • Experience in data management, R, and ArcGIS programs
  • Resourceful and flexible.
  • Proven organizational and time management skills.
  • Asset: Bilingual (French/English)
Work Conditions
  • Location: Preference for candidates in Halifax, NS but will accept candidates anywhere in Canada.
  • Term length: 1 year fixed-term, with the possibility of extension dependent on receiving continued funding
  • Manual dexterity required to operate computer and peripherals.
  • Interacts with employees, various management levels and the public at large.
  • Repetitive work.
  • Overtime may be required
