Job Description

The Thermalhydraulics & Safety Analysis Branch is responsible for the development and application of computer codes and analysis tools in support of design and safety analysis of current and advanced nuclear reactors. Capabilities in the areas of fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and multi-physics & multi-scale modelling and analysis (including sensitivity and uncertainty analyses) are applied to safety assessments and analysis for design-basis and beyond-design-basis accidents, and severe accident scenarios in nuclear reactors. The branch also develops advanced reactor concepts and technologies.

The Research Scientist in Severe Accident Modelling will join our experienced team in carrying out cutting-edge research to enhance nuclear safety; you will contribute to severe accident analysis for current reactor fleet and advanced nuclear reactors including small modular reactors (SMR).

If you have an advanced degree (or within 12 months of obtaining one) in a relevant field and are interested in pursuing a career in nuclear, we would like to hear from you.

DUTIES
Reporting to the Manager of Thermalhydraulics & Safety Analysis Branch, the incumbent has the following responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the application and qualification of severe accident analysis codes for the current CANDU and light water reactor (LWR) fleets and advanced nuclear reactors including small modular reactors (SMR).
  • Contribute to reactor safety research as part of a multi-disciplinary team (both experimental and modelling) in areas such as thermalhydraulics, severe accident, and fuel performance.
  • Manage Federal Science & Technology (FST) and CANDU Owners Group (COG) / commercial projects, work packages, or tasks on an as-required basis, ensuring deliverables and milestones are achieved on time and on budget.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • An advanced degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) in Engineering (e.g., Nuclear / Mechanical / Chemical / Industrial or similar) or Science from a university of recognized standing.
  • Background in numerical methods, single- and two-phase fluid flow and heat transfer.
  • Experience in the application of severe accident and/or thermalhydraulics codes to model postulated accident scenarios in CANDU and/or advanced reactors including small modular reactors (SMR) is desirable.
  • Knowledge of severe accident and thermalhydraulics codes (e.g., MAAP-CANDU, MELCOR, ARIANT) would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of radiological consequences (radiation doses) and uncertainty and sensitivity analysis methods would be an asset.
  • A proven track record in the publication of technical papers and reports.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in the use of workstations and microcomputers and associated operating systems (Windows, Linux, etc.) and software applications (e.g., MS-Office).
