The Ottawa Neighbourhood Study (ONS) is seeking a dynamic and versatile team member to support data analysis, visualization, and public-facing communications. This hybrid role combines strong technical and analytical capabilities with the ability to communicate complex data in accessible and engaging ways.
We are currently seeking a
Data and Communications Analyst
to support Kady Carr, Research Director of the Ottawa Neighbourhood Study (ONS), and the broader ONS team at the Bruyere Health Research Institute. Our team works at the intersection of research, data, and community engagement to advance health equity in Ottawa.
The successful candidate will support the development of neighbourhood-level insights, build interactive data tools and dashboards, and contribute to knowledge mobilization, marketing, and communication efforts. This role will appeal to someone who is equally comfortable with code and with community, and who thrives in a collaborative, purpose-driven environment.
Main duties and responsibilities
Data and Technical
Analyze datasets related to neighbourhood health, demographics, and social conditions
Perform data cleaning, transformation, validation, and quality assurance checks
Write and maintain scripts (e.g., R, Python, SQL) for data processing and automation
Build and maintain interactive dashboards and visualizations (e.g., Tableau, Power BI)
Manage updates to public data assets on the ONS website, including charts, maps, and tables
Monitor and ensure data accuracy and integrity across ONS platforms and tools
Website and content management
Update and maintain website content using a content management system (e.g., WordPress)
Post new datasets, indicators, and visualizations to the ONS website in a timely and accurate manner
Manage newsletter archives and subscription tools via the website and integrated platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, Constant Contact)
Ensure consistency and accuracy of messaging across web, newsletter, and other digital platforms
Communications and Engagement
Translate technical findings into plain-language summaries, infographics, and stories
Support the creation of public reports, presentations, and social media content
Lead or support the development and distribution of the ONS newsletter, including content planning, writing, layout, and performance tracking
Collaboration and Strategic Input
Contribute to the development of new data tools and products that meet partner needs
Work closely with community organizations, researchers, and municipal partners
Participate in grant writing, storytelling, and dissemination strategies
Qualifications
Required
Post-secondary education in a relevant field (e.g., data science, public health, geography, sociology, communications, journalism, computer science)
Strong proficiency in at least one programming language used in data analysis (e.g., R, Python, SQL)
Experience with data visualization platforms (e.g., Tableau, Power BI)
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Demonstrated ability to communicate technical content to non-technical audiences
Experience in social media or public communications strategy
Strong data literacy and contextual understanding of equity, social policy, or community health
Asset
Experience working with open data, Census data, or administrative datasets
Familiarity with GIS and spatial analysis tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS)
Graphic design or data storytelling experience (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite)
Fluent in French and English, an asset

Bruyere Health and its Research Institute are fully affiliated with the University of Ottawa, and have other regional academic, government, NGO, and industry partners engaged in collaborative research and innovation initiatives. Our research priorities include Aging and Long-Term Care, Palliative Care, Rehabilitation and Recovery, and Social Accountability (encompassing Primary Care and Health Equity).
About Ottawa Neighbourhood Study
The Ottawa Neighbourhood Study (ONS) is a collaborative research and data initiative based at the Bruyere Health Research Institute under the scientific leadership of Dr. Claire Kendall, clinician scientist and Associate Dean, Social Accountability at the University of Ottawa' Faculty of Medicine.
ONS works with academic, municipal, and community partners to collect, analyze, and share data on the health and social conditions of Ottawa's neighbourhoods. The goal is to support evidence-informed decision-making that promotes equity and improves quality of life across the city.
ONS tools and data are widely used by organizations such as Ottawa Public Health, the City of Ottawa, and dozens of community agencies.
