Position Overview

The Department of the Clinical Neurosciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Manager. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Research Manager is a highly skilled senior scientist with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, concepts, technical aspects, and practices essential to directing and conducting complex neurobiology, biochemistry, and stem cell-oriented research projects. The Research Manager\'s role will be multifaceted and include directing the research program well as managing local, national, and international collaborative research projects.

This is a regular full-time position; however, there will be times when the individual may be required to work outside the normal working hours. National and international travel will also be required to attend project-related meetings and conferences. At times, the incumbent may be called upon to present their work at meetings.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Project Direction and Leadership:
  • Direct and manage the research program
  • Develop, design, and implement research projects for summer students, graduate & post-doctoral students, as well as research staff in conjunction with the Principal Investigator
  • Developed and implement the scientific vision of the Principal Investigator
  • Establish and maintain a multi-faceted research team in conjunction with the Principal Investigator
  • Manage performance and development of individual team members to maximize success and motivation
  • Oversee research progress and adjust project objectives as necessary
  • Oversee development of technical protocols
  • Contribute to departmental administration (organizing meetings, journal club, seminar series)
  • Oversee the development and management of the lab budget
  • Demonstrate fiscal responsibility with respect to cost of experiments, technology, external collaborations, and travel
  • Ensure lab operations meet all university compliance and regulatory guidelines
  • Oversee management of legal issues related to research (i.e. ethics, MTAs, IP)
  • Coordinate the assembly and submission of papers for publication in conjunction with the Principal Investigator
  • Coordinate the assembly and submission of provincial and national grants to obtain funding in conjunction with the Principal Investigator
  • Seek out new opportunities and provide recommendations to enhance technology and support systems
  • Manage institutional, national, and international collaborations in conjunction with the Principal Investigator
  • Staff Management:
  • Responsible for working with Principal investigator to determine positions that would support the strategic goals of the Research group.
  • Manages the creation of job profiles, hiring, and onboarding of staff.
  • Performs and engages staff in annual performance reviews
  • When required, performs disciplinary, including terminations, actions
  • Oversees the complete range of human resource management for operational staff.
  • Ensures all staff have a Hazard Assessments in place to reduce risk for their position
  • Technical:
  • Serve as research lead on cross-functional laboratory, basic science, preclinical and clinical project teams; working as leader to design, plan and implement multiple individual projects that contribute to an overarching goal.
  • Authoring or contributing to abstracts/manuscripts for publication
  • Review assay validation and bioanalytical reports and provide training to internal staff
  • Oversee the development and validation of experimental methods related to neurobiology, stem cell biology, protein purification, and protein biochemistry
  • Oversee the design, implementation, optimization for technical aspects of new research projects related to neurobiology, stem cell biology, protein purification, and protein biochemistry
  • Provide expert oversight on technical matters
  • Collaborate in designing research projects (in conjunction with the PI) that will attract external funding as well as lead to peer-reviewed high-impact publications
  • Communication:
  • Engage the external environment through thought leadership and by publishing scientific work
  • Oversee completion of annual and semi-annual reports
  • Develop presentations to report scientific progress
  • Present project progress at conferences and meetings to encourage collaboration
  • Act as a liaison to provide communication between research teams, supervisors, and funders
  • Coach and mentor students
  • Communicate project performance to student supervisors
  • Author scientific reports to provide updates to funders
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Graduate degree in a related field or commensurate experience
  • Advanced knowledge of neurobiology, stem cell biology, protein purification, and protein biochemistry
  • 3-5 years of related research and management experience
  • Experience hiring and managing staff in a unionized environment an asset
  • Advanced knowledge of research administrative procedures is required
  • Excellent leadership and organizational skills
  • Must possess above-average interpersonal and communication skills
  • Self-directed, enthusiastic and honest in the performance of duties
  • Ability to manage time effectively and determine priorities as well as delegate tasks appropriately
  • Hold a superior understanding of the University environment
  • Successful grant writing skills with a focus on infrastructure grant applications
  • Knowledgeable in writing medical/scientific research protocols
  • Experience in writing medical/scientific literature for publication
  • Strong scientific and academic writing skills required
  • Proficiency with databases, research data management, and statistical software
  • Knowledge of research design and basic knowledge of biostatistics
  • Experience in working with internal/external teams to manage and grow a project and/or program
  • Understanding and comfort with anatomy, procedures related to surgery and cadaveric tissue, processing patient samples, performing animal surgeries
  • Experience with University compliance-related issues such as research ethics board approvals, animal utilization protocols, and biohazard/biosafety permits
