Position Overview

The Department of Clinical Neurosciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Associate Director, Medical Robotics.

The Research Associate\'s primary purpose is to be responsible for big data management, maintenance, or control of a specialized area, here advanced machine learning and data science. This may include in-scope supervision of peers, students/trainees, demonstrate and teach unique relevant technology nuances to team members, includes surgical residents or operating room team at and beyond Foothills Medical Centre, indepth knowledge of cloud computing/analytics and connectivity; help advance research projects as well as ensure that as technologies change, the team adapts to and learns them seamlessly; is flexible, adaptable to priorities while ensuring timelines are met with; manage trouble shoot independently or working collaboratively with experts.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Ability to independently research for advanced knowledge and expertise in the field of AI, data science (literature and technology review) and how they relate to the build of next generation surgical technologies
  • Prepare report based on the findings, propose novel projects and convince the research group on future of AI/data science, and why commitment to such an area early on would be advantageous
  • Plan and work with the team of engineers (mechanical/mechatronic software, electrical, computer science, other data science/AI) and other academic or corporate collaborators, towards a common project goal
  • Understand regulatory principles in the field and contribute towards developing tools-technologies to medical grade/standards
  • Conduct scientific research, in particular perform advanced statistics on data so available, prepare observations in the form of manuscripts, conference papers, patents, or new grant applications
  • Innovative, creative in designing AI programs, coding original machine learning algorithms, and presenting the models or findings via unique infographics/figures/charts
  • Create novel machine learning models/architectures to suit technologies in development or advance existing architecture
  • Able to independently monitor incoming big-data, detect issues promptly, trouble shoot, propose solutions or resolve independently or as a team effort
  • Understand big data, analytics and interpret findings, propose new methods of analyses and AI framework in the context of large-scale multi-centre randomized clinical trials
  • High organizational standards and ability to delegate and collaborate
  • Able to train/mentor juniors, and discuss, learn new knowledge from peers, supervisors
  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus community
  • Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate reports to manager is kept informed of activities, and progress of work
  • Demonstrates strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Extensive understanding, continued learning and development of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • PhD with minimum 3 years of post-doctoral experience in related discipline
  • Professional and experienced in medical device field, in particular sensors, robotics and AI
  • Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Ability to provide and supervise technical operations of intelligent surgical systems in the operating room settings
  • Direct and demonstrable research experience in the subject matter of the research project is essential
  • Recommend change to processes or procedures as applicable
  • Interact with other members of the team and undertake, supervise literature reviews and propose new design metrics
  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of machine learning, technical procedures and applications to surgical device/systems
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments.
  • Understanding of safety codes and standards related to specialization and advanced AI for surgical robotics and advanced operating room connectivity
  • Experience with clinical setting/operating room environment, imaging, surgical team, surgical devices, including various biological samples (eg. blood, tissues, urine, etc)
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, organization, problem solving, and interpersonal skills
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills, various cloud architecture and cloud based systems, advanced statistical programs including R, advanced and agile software systems and programming languages including C, C#, Python, JAVA, Jira, Github, Applications development,
  • Data safety and security protocols, network safety protocols
