Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.JOB SUMMARYThe Reid laboratory located at BC Childrenxe2x80x99s Hospital Research Institute studies the early-life immunology of pediatric leukemia using a range of experimental systems, including transgenic mice, adoptive transfer models, human xenograft models, and ex vivo and in vitro analysis of patient samples and human cell lines.The labxe2x80x99s overall research goal is to better understand how the immune system influences the onset and progression of childhood leukemia and to use that knowledge to stimulate the immune system to provide an effective strategy for the treatment and prevention of the disease.The successful applicant must ethically conduct all research activities, in compliance with all applicable rules/regulations of The University of British Columbia and rules governing its activities. All procedures or data recorded must be accurate, reflect the work performed, and be reported to the principal investigator.ORGANIZATIONAL STATUSThe successful candidate will report directly to Dr. Gregor Reid, the principal investigator, and will work in a strongly collaborative and collegial manner with all project team members to meet research goals and objectives.WORK PERFORMED

  • Design, plan and conduct lab experiments independently. Lab techniques performed may include: manage cell culture, expand and differentiate primary cells, perform molecular biology techniques including DNA/RNA/protein isolation, PCR, gel electrophoresis, molecular cloning, sequencing, western blotting, immunoprecipitations, gene knockdown, protein expression and purification, flow cytometry, and immunofluorescence staining.
  • Assist with mouse models, small animal handling, husbandry, and colony management.
  • Troubleshoot experiments with the principal investigator, repeating experiments as needed.
  • Compile, analyze, and summarize data using statistical and other computer-based software.
  • Participate in meetings related to technical, scientific and organizational aspects of the projects.
  • Contribute to scientific publications and grant writing.
  • Assist in training and mentoring new lab members in the proper use of lab equipment, techniques, and procedures.
  • General lab housekeeping and maintenance, which may include dishwashing and sterilization of lab glassware, waste management, and organization.
  • Other related tasks and duties as required.
CONSEQUENCE OF ERRORThe applicant is expected to exercise good judgment and responsibility in determining and coordinating work flow. They should carefully observe and evaluate all experimental results. Dr. Reid will meet regularly with them to discuss methodologies, results, and problems. Errors may be corrected by repeating experiments. Poor judgment or errors may result in incorrect data interpretation and potential loss of funding.SUPERVISION RECEIVEDThe applicant will be trained in various research techniques and expected to perform the tasks independently. The principal investigator will assist in troubleshooting as needed.SUPERVISION GIVENThe research technician will help supervise and train new undergraduate and graduate students.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
