About Our Opportunity: We are seeking an energetic, articulate, and passionate individual to join our Chemistry team. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the design, synthesis, purification, and analysis of oligonucleotides. She/He will be joining a team of highly motivated and experienced scientists and will contribute advancing the development programs at Northern RNA. This individual will perform synthetic organic chemistry in the laboratory with great emphasis on safe, reproducible, and cost-effective chemical process development for organic molecules used in a variety of bio-applications.   • Conduct multi-step synthesis and optimization through effective reaction planning under the direction of research scientist/scientists.
  • Work under the supervision of research scientist/scientists to achieve the objectives of project.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking to tackle complex chemistry challenges.
  • Utilize modern synthetic strategies to design and execute synthesis of unknown organic molecules.
  • Experience in solid state synthesis of chemically modified oligonucleotides and its purification, characterization is an asset.
  • Ability to conduct isolation, purification and characterization of synthesized compounds using modern chromatographic techniques, including but not limited to ion exchange chromatography, flash chromatography, preparative LC, crystallization, etc.
  • Conduct analysis and characterization of unknown organic compounds using TLC, HPLC, 1H NMR, 31P NMR, LCMS, GCMS, etc.
  • Support analytical characterization of ongoing and new compounds to ensure consistent quality requirements are met.
  • Work closely with colleagues to scale up ongoing and new products.
  • Maintain a high level of scientific integrity, safe and productive laboratory environment laboratory safety.
  • Accurately document experiments and results in laboratory notebooks in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain appropriate standards for lab safety and hazardous material management.
  • Resourceful, Proactive, and able to work under minimum supervision.
  • May perform other related duties as assigned.
Education, Work Experience, Knowledge, and Skills: Formal Education:
  • Master\'s Degree in Organic/Medicinal/Pharmaceutical Chemistry or related field. Bachelor\'s Degree a holder are welcome to apply, with at least 5 years related lab experience.
Work Experience:
  • Preference will be given to candidates with previous work experience, at least 2 years (with MSc Degree) to 5 years (BSc Degree) in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
  • Technical experience and understanding of chromatographic purification systems (e.g., AKTA Pilot, AKTA Pure, biotage etc.) and techniques (AEX, SEC, flash) is essential.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Hands-on experience in analytical techniques such as HPLC, NMR, LC-MS, other Mass spectroscopy techniques.
  • Experience in optimizing small scale chemical reactions to enable multi gram synthesis is an asset.
  • Effective at working with a diverse team of internal and external collaborators.
  • Familiarity with industry standard chemistry-specific software.
  • Strategic thinker with sound technical skills, analytical ability, good judgement, and strong operational focus.
Working conditions:
  • Physical environment: Follow Standard operating procedures, documentation and working under aseptic conditions
  • Physical effort: Must meet physical requirements of the position, including walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods, operating tools, and equipment, lifting heavy objects etc.
  • Sensory Attention: This position requires recording experiment observations, data analysis, data interpretation, decision making, attention to details, interdepartmental data communication and data transfer.
  • Mental Pressures: This position requires working on projects with tight deadlines, coordinating with different departments and multiple tasks.
