Your Challenge

Help bring research to life and drive your career forward with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Canada's largest research and technology organization.

We are looking for an early-career Research Associate, Quantitative operando methods for electron microscopy to support our Nanotechnology Research Centre. The Research Associate would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

We are looking for a Research Associate (RA) to enhance our advanced materials characterization capabilities. Specifically, the RA will participate in projects developing and using quantitative in-situ and operando approaches (thermal, optical, and electrochemical) to study energy conversion and storage materials using electron microscopy and related methods. Projects will range from very fundamental (e.g. understanding role of thermal annealing on sample crystallinity, morphology, and light spectroscopy, with academic partners) to very applied (e.g. developing improved characterization platforms in partnership with local industry). This role will build on NRC-NANO's significant experience with advanced electron microscopy and operando characterization of lithium-ion battery components. The successful candidate will gain experience in a broad range of areas (instrument and method development, automation / scripting, energy materials, electrochemistry) and will have many opportunities for publications and co-supervision.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

As part of the RA Program you must have received your PhD or Masters in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or closely related field within the last five years or you expect to receive the degree within the next six months.

For information on certificates and diplomas issued abroad, please see

Experience
  • Significant hands-on experience with electron microscopy or experimental method development is required. Experience with both will be preferred; and
  • Significant experience writing and publishing scientific papers in recognized journals.
Assets :
  • Experience with scripting / automated data analysis;
  • Experience with electrochemistry, ideally in the context of lithium-ion batteries;
  • Experience with structural (specifically x-ray diffraction), thermal (e.g. differential scanning calorimetry), and optical (e.g. Raman, IR) characterization methods.
