In accordance with the , this position offers a comprehensive benefits package found on our and annual salary range of $59,822 - $67,303. This position has an approximate appointment of 1 year.

Location - Work primarily takes place at North Campus Edmonton.

Position

The incumbent will be responsible for carrying out experiments related to the characterization of the biochemical and biological functions of a member of the DEAD box family of RNA helicases, called DDX1. The primary focus of the research is to determine the role of DDX1 in various biological processes, including genotoxic and environmental stress responses, neuronal differentiation, embryonic development and metabolic function.

The project will involve tissue culture using both normal and cancer cell lines; transfection and transduction of cells; treatment of cells with agents that cause stress to the cells; mass spectrometry analysis; metabolic studies; immunofluorescence; microscopy; 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis; molecular biology techniques including preparation of plasmid and genomic DNA, DNA cloning, RNA preparation and analysis; protein chemistry including western blot analysis, immunoprecipitation and preparation of recombinant protein; etc.

Duties

  • Carry out research projects under the direction of the fundholder, including development of experiments, research methods and protocols
  • Design, coordinate and participate in data collection
  • Carry out data processing, image reconstruction and analysis of results
  • Participate in the writing of research papers
  • Participate in the editing of grant applications
  • Assist in the guidance and coaching of students, under the direction of the fundholder
  • Present research results through laboratory meetings, seminars and scientific conferences
  • Other related research and laboratory duties, as defined by the fundholder
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in biochemistry or molecular biology/genetics; post-doctorate in biochemistry or molecular biology/genetics
  • PhD and post-doctoral experience in a variety of techniques including: molecular biology, western blot analysis. Immunofluorescence, cell sorting, cell culture, immunoprecipitation, mass spectrometry, 2D gel electrophoresis, preparation of recombinant protein.
  • Ability to work in a team.
