The focus of the Williams laboratory is in use of nanotechnology to develop oncology based diagnostic tests along with the use of animal models for discovery and validation of metastatic inhibitors. This position will work primarily on nanotechnology projects focused on extracellular vesicles.The Research Associate will be highly skilled in extracellular vesicle work and responsible for the planning and execution of laboratory work. They will also contribute to writing and publishing research project results.The expected salary for this position is $69,000.The length of appointment is up to 1 year at a time.ORGANIZATIONAL STATUSThe Williams lab is located on UBC Vancouver campus at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The Research Associate reports directly to the Principal Investigator. Daily interactions with graduate students and undergraduate students require that the Research Associate must be able to work as part of a team as well as independently. They will plan, coordinate, conduct and report on assigned research projects. They will use professional judgement in carrying out responsibility related to the research.WORK PERFORMED

  • Propose, design, and implement research procedures to support experimental questions
  • Work independently on research projects and support trainee research projects
  • Apply standard and unique experimental techniques by utilizing technical and theoretical expertise to plan, coordinate, and execute assigned research project. Will use techniques for extracellular vesicle isolation, characterization, and function. This includes, but is not limited to, differential centrifugation, size exclusion chromatography, fixed and live cell imaging, DLS, NTA, preparation of samples for mass spectrometry
  • Collect, records, analyses, validates, interprets, organizes and presents research data to Principal Investigator
  • Participate in grant writing to secure funding
  • Participate in manuscript writing and editing
  • Prepare analyzed data for publication using illustrator
  • Maintain excellent record of all data collected and ensure data storage and backup of all raw and analyzed data on Williams lab shared drive
  • Support trainee project by assisting in experimental design, execution, and manuscript generation and editing
CONSEQUENCE OF ERRORThis position requires professional action on all aspects of research work and is responsible for the production of high quality, reproducible, well-documented research activities. Errors in judgement and failure to report problems have significant consequences and will lead to termination of the position.SUPERVISION RECEIVEDThe Research Associate works independently, in consultation with the PI, to perform all work-related functions and receive direction from the PI on subsequent new assignments or changes.SUPERVISION GIVENThe Research Associate will be responsible for providing direction and training to trainees and technical staff as appropriate.QUALIFICATIONSEducation/Work ExperiencePh.D. in Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Cancer Biology or equivalent. Minimum of 5 years of recent, relevant research experience. Demonstrated experience in scientific research, project management, and dissemination of results in the form of peer-reviewed research publications and conference dissemination. Knowledge in extracellular vesicles and cancer biology is considered an asset.SKILLSExcellent knowledge of specialized laboratory techniques and procedures used in extracellular vesicle work. Experience in molecular biology techniques, biochemistry, and cell culture-based methods (i.e., plasmid transformations, reporter assays, immunoprecipitation, western blot, live cell imaging, image analysis, mass spectrometry). Successful applicant will have excellent problem-solving skills, in addition to good organizational, interpersonal, and communication (oral and written) skills. Applicant will have skills in statistical data analysis, data handling, data interpretation, generation of figures for research publications. Ability to work in a collaborative team setting and also to work independently as directed is needed. Drive and enthusiasm to both lead and work as a team member with a collaborative group. Effective oral and written communication, analytical and interpersonal skills.
