Position summary A research associate position in advanced manufacturing is open.The research associate will work with the principal investigator to carry out research in the general area of advanced manufacturing with a specific focus on Lean manufacturing and dynamic VSM modeling, and industry 4.0 integration. Experience in VSM, and industrial manufacturing processes, especially in a high-mix assembly line, manufacturing process modeling, tolerance analysis, work positioning and setup, and simulation of the manufacturing process is the core requirement. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for the layout study, applying lean principles, and performing real-time DVSM of an HMLV manufacturing environment with the integration of indoor positioning systems (IPS) and sensors for real-time process monitoring. The candidate should also have sufficient familiarity with industrial automation principles and instrumentation selection. The real-time data from the sensors and IPS will be integrated into the company\'s ERP for real-time monitoring of the progress of the production line, WIP, and workforce utilization. In addition to research, the research associate will also carry out co-supervision of research students, development of research grants, research manuscripts and communication, and research management, and teaching. The successful candidate will be required to work independently and demonstrate excellent verbal and written English communication skills through high-quality journal publications in the research area Duties
  • Summarizing completed protocols and studies; writes scientific articles and manuscripts for publication and presentation.
  • Coordinating research equipment design, purchasing requests, and writing specifications and justifications for equipment purchases.
  • Preparing analytical reports relative to research data.
  • Monitoring progress of research projects and coordinating information between different stakeholders.
  • Apply specialized knowledge and scientific principles to review, critically appraise and interpret published literature.
  • Develop estimates of time and resources for a research program.
  • Use statistical software to analyze complex data and interpret results.
  • Liaise between the program centre and remote program sites and personnel.
  • Develop presentations and present at meetings, seminars, and conferences.
  • Conduct literature searches.
    • Develop and manage budget for a research program.
  • Research new products, tests, and methodological instruments and reports to the principal investigator relative to feasibility, quality, and benefits of such new developments.
  • Adapts procedures or methods relative to changes in research projects.
  • Design and implement research protocols; designs safety procedures.
  • Collate and analyze complex data. Maintain database.
  • Summarize completed protocols and studies; write scientific articles and manuscripts for publication and presentation.
  • Supervise the safe handling of material; coordinate purchasing requests and writes specifications and justifications for equipment purchases.
  • Supervise junior research associates, graduate students, and student workers in the laboratory.
  • Prepare analytical reports relative to research data.
  • Monitor progress of research projects and coordinate information between departmental sections.
  • Perform a wide and complex variety of assays, test, and studies.
  • Perform highly specialized and advanced experiments.
  • Collect, prepare, analyzes, and evaluates specimens.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Master degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering
  • PhD. Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 5 or more years of post Ph.D. Experience
  • Documented track record of publications in the area of advanced manufacturing with a minimum of 10 journal papers in advanced manufacturing in impact factor journals.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in lean manufacturing, dynamic VSM, machining processes, tolerancing, and GD&T.
  • 3 years or more of demonstrated experience in polymer and metal additive manufacturing technology with focus on CAD work flow, CAM work flow, operations, and maintenance.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in working in a research and development organization
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in leading research projects and supervising MSc. And PhD. Students
The qualifications mentioned below are considered to be an asset:
  • Experience in researching new products, tests, and methodological instruments and reporting to the principal investigator relative to feasibility, quality, and benefits of such new developments.
  • Experience of designing and adapting procedures or methods relative to changes in research projects.
  • Experience of Designing and implementing research protocols; safety procedures.
  • Experience in Collating and analyzing complex data and maintaining database.
