Description:

The Space Flight Laboratory (SFL) is a world-leading satellite provider that offers a complete suite of nano-, micro-, and small satellites - including high-performance, low-cost CubeSats - that satisfy the needs of a broad range of mission types from 3 to 500 kilograms. Dating from 1998, SFL\'s heritage of on-orbit successes includes over 70 satellites and distinct missions related to Earth observation, atmospheric monitoring, ship tracking, communication, radio frequency (RF) geolocation, technology demonstration, space astronomy, solar physics, space plasma, and other scientific research.

SFL is seeking an experienced individual to join the electrical engineering team. The successful candidate will have a leading role in the design, development, and testing of electronic hardware which operates onboard SFL\'s satellites.

The selected candidate will work at SFL\'s Toronto, Ontario office. SFL offers a competitive compensation package with excellent benefits and pension plan.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Perform schematic capture and PCB layout of various electronic designs to be integrated into satellites and ground support equipment.
  • Perform circuit analysis and simulations.
  • Bring up prototypes of new designs, test functionality, and characterize performance in various operating environments.
  • Participate in hardware testing activities.
  • Participate in design reviews.
  • Interface with PCB manufacturers.
  • Interface with Contract Manufacturers for PCB assembly.
  • Work with engineering teams across multiple disciplines to understand, derive, and document requirements leading to the successful implementation of space missions.
  • Work with and provide guidance to more junior team members.
  • Develop and execute research vision with PI to achieve research goals.
  • Research new technologies and new applications for developing electronic hardware.
  • The research associate is expected to publish both at conferences and in journals.
  • Assist with the supervision of graduate students doing research on electrical subsystem development.
Skills and Qualifications

Education:
  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
Experience:
  • 4-6 years of industrial or post-graduate experience in the relevant technical field.
  • Experience in the space industry is an asset.
  • Experience with design and layout of high-speed digital interfaces, such as DDR RAM, SATA, etc.
  • Experience with design and layout of microcontrollers and microprocessors.
  • Experience with design and layout of analog circuits.
  • Experience with design and layout of switch-mode power supplies.
  • Experience with FPGAs and HDL is a strong asset.
Skills:
  • Demonstrated excellent leadership/organization as a team leader in R&D projects.
  • Demonstrated research excellence in the area of electrical engineering, preferably with a strong publication record.
  • Strong familiarity with lab test equipment such as power supplies, multimeters, oscilloscopes, etc.
  • Knowledge of schematic capture and PCB layout tools (SFL uses Altium Designer).
  • Knowledge of SPICE tools.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
